G R On Tour
Pushkar (8th - 13th June)
Due to the train problems we ended up here as we can get a connecting train to mumbai in a few days time. After reading the lonely planet (our new bible) it sounded as though it was a pretty good place to come to and so it turned out. The danish girls had come from here and they recommended we stayed at hotel white house so we did for the first night anyway, nice enough but missing one vital ingredient, cable tv. Due to the start of the world cup and more importantly the England game we needed to find a hotel with a tv. We found hotel new park which was awesome, ac, cable & a swimming pool, we were in heaven until...we found out Pushkar is a dry town (for religious reasons, pushkar is on the main pilgrimage route for the muslims). Hats off to the boys who had managed to get themselves to an alcohol free town for the start of the world cup...well played!!
Pushkar was a really nice town, just a few annoying scams are in operation though. The main one involving so called priests giving you a flower to throw into the lake and it apparently sends good luck to your family & friends but they don't mention they expect substantial payment at the end of it...thank god for the prior warning from the lonely planet as on our first walk into town we were accosted by a priest but we managed to get away after being told how disrespectful etc blah blah blah we were being. Met a few others who told the same story as well, its a shame as this really tarnishes what is holistically a really nice place to be.
As i'm sure most of you will have guessed we spent a lot of time by the pool for a few days. It was so nice to be able to cool down in the water for a while as the temperatures were still in the high 30s. We met a cockney couple who were staying at the hotel for the same reason as us (tv for football!) who were nice, probably meeting up with them again in goa in a week or so.
One final point on pushkar...you really didn't think we could not have a beer on the go for the England game did you?!...some planning with Rich (cockney guy) & a hotel worker resulted in us smuggling some beer in from an off licence 2kms outside of town to the hotel...felt like we were 14 again as we had to hide all the bottles.
We had one night in Ajmer on the 13th (20min bus ride from pushkar) as we had a 20hour train journey from there to Mumbai on the 14th.
