Our lovely neighbour, Mike drove us to the airport on Monday evening to catch our flight to London via Hong Kong. I was very impressed we were so organized we had time for a drink with George and Bea before we headed off - didn't last for long though as Mike dropped us off at the international terminal, Brian declared he had left his phone at home! So Ollie and I headed to a café to wait, Brian jumped in a taxi to go home to retriev his phone. He got back with about 45m remaining to check in (phew!).
After a brief stop in Hong Kong, we arrived in London at around 3pm and headed to our apartment just near Tower Bridge. It was a long flight and we needed every bit of the 5 days in London to get over the jet lag! The apartment had gorgeous views over the Thames and Tower Bridge so waking up at 2am wasn't that bad when you could sit and look at the view and much on vegemite toast. '
On our first day we ventured next door to the Tower of London and immersed ourselves in the history of the beheadings of those who committed treason including Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's second wife and Queen of England. Hard to imagine really but very interesting to listen to the tales of the Tower.
The next day was Ollie's 18th birthday and we ventured to the Sherlock Holmes Museum at 221B Baker Street. The trip was not without its drama with Brian jumping on a departing train as Ollie and I were still coming down the stairs - of course the doors closed and off he sailed into the dark London underground. Ollie and I just looked at each other and shrugged and jumped on the next train - so use to this we are! We met up with Brian and the South Kensington station where of course we got into trouble for being too slow (sigh!).
After the museum we had a traditional English pub lunch and headed back to the apartment for an afternoon nap (still jet lagged). Ollie chose an 18 inch pizza for his birthday dinner which was a hit.
Friday and Saturday we spent with Paul, our good friend who works in London but lives in Bordeaux. He stayed with us at the apartment and it was lovely to catch up with him and hear the news about his family and see how they are all growing up so fast.
