We've made it. A long day of travel brought us to a beautiful, sunny Prague. After a manaical ride from the airport we checked in at the Palace Road. Quaint, charming and just below the Prague Castle. The wireless is down so updating this blog will not be as efficient as I had hoped. The pictures will be a little random right now, until I can somehow get them loaded from my camera to this computer....
Our room is up, oh four flights of stairs! Lucky there were two young attendants to carry my luggage. Alex huffed and puffed with his all the way up! Very charming old building, our room is in an attic with exposed wooden alpine beams. Because it is tucked up in the rafters we can stand upright only along the center of the room! But it is cozy, clean and comfortable. We like it alot.
We set out for the city after freshening up, looking for pivo and gulas. We found a decent place, right in the center of Old Town - which we really wanted to avoid, but it turned out to be rather good. The place, Will fill in name in a bit, offered traditional czech cuisine. I had heard all about the Smazeny Syr (fried cheese) and thought it would be a very guilty pleasure to try - uh unh. It was just terrible, I don't know if it was the cheese or the oil it was fried in but I didn't like it at all. I suppose that's a good thing - can you imagine finding out that you liked fried cheese? I had thought I could just live on that and Pivo while we're here!!! Alex had a venison gulash, I had a roast beef in a sweet sauce with Knedlky (dumplings). The dumplings look much more like bread, but the waiter assured me they were not the same. Yummy at any rate.
We then haunted Old Town Square at night. Just beautiful. They have all the old tall building lit up. We walked around and saw a little shop selling Absinthe. I guiltily bought some - but am afraid to try it! They were selling one bottle of Beetle Absinthe - and it had a huge, gnarly, nasty looking beetle at the bottom! Pic now in album. Another bottle had a nest of maggots at the bottom. Tequila with the worm has nothing on this...
We were tired so tried to find our way home. Got lost. We hadn't come over to old town via the Charles Bridge so we had to ask for directions a couple of times (my phone out of juice so no GPS). A lively young lady says, "My FRIEND, it is just..." I love her! I think we were the only people there who didn't know where the famous bridge was!
Made it back and slept very soundly, looking forward to exploring this awesome place.
