The ANZAC day dawn service at Villers-Brettoneux was amazing! it was so busy and we had to park a kilometre away and walk up to the memorial where the only light at 5am came from the cars. we manage to get seats right up the front of the service right up close to memorial and the speakers, one of which was Kevin Rudd! i was not surprised to hear him use those stupid "fair go" and "roll up our sleeves" aussie phrases he loves so much! the town of Villers Brettoneux was saved by the Australian force on ANZAC day 1918 and the town is now full of love for Australia with a museum dedicated to us and cut out kangaroos all over the gardens of the town!!! the service was beautiful as the sun rose and we heard to last post and representatives from france and australia payed tribute in french and english. so many flowers were laid - by commonwealth representatives from australia, south africa, india, canada. There were many people who gave flozers for loved ones they had lost in recent conflicts. as the service ended the sun ad just risen and people shared tea and coffee as they walked amongst the hundreds of headstones, reflecting. it was weird to be on the other side of the world remembering something that happened here with people from so far away. I cant imagine what it must be like for the people who have had personal losses when no one in my family on either side has died in war.it is definitely something i will remember for a very long time.
