Life is Journey...so enjoy it!
28.03.10 9.55 british time - heathrow!
waiting in the lounge to board and we are informed our plane is delayed by 30 minutes. we nearly didnt have a cabin crew! im sat here thinking of how much im going to miss everyone.
29.03.10 6pm thai time - river view guesthouse!
after the longest flight we've ever been on - even though grant slept through most of it and through the bad turbalence im one very tired backpacker (on the plane they handed us a immagation slip to fill in, to most people this is no problem but for those of us who know stacey this caused some confusion. anyway after clearing up with the stuardess that we wernt actually emigrating to thailand, we landed and we on our way)! checked into our hotel after taking the 1st taxi driver we saw at the airport. the end of the ride turned out to be what we thought was the most disturbing ride in a taxi ever...we s*** ourselves. he drove us down all these tiny little ally ways, which were streets to the thais but what seemed like a trap to us. we thought it was a set up, we thought we were going to get killed. the taxi driver stopped to ask someone where to go to get to our hotel, the thais were all looking in at us like fresh meat, but we were fine. we got out, paid and soon we were in our room, safe and sound. we are still alive.
we made our way to the 8th floor where the bar and restaurant is. we had our 1st thai curry and 1st thai drink. grant had a rather hot curry which made his nose run, i went for a simple stir fry. with the view of the Chaphraya River below we sat there as it got dark and watched the river boats go by. WE ARE IN THAILAND!
Our 1st Morning!
After what seemed like the slowest night ever and with thunder and lightening and stroms we got through our 1st night. woke up 20 minutes before breakfast finished, so rushed up and ordered some non cooked fried eggs and some really gigantic beans with 2 party sausages. it was histerical. looking through our lonely planet wondering what to do next.
Plans for Ko San Road!
1st 5 minutes out of the hotel and we get lost. i stressed as i felt intimidated by all the thais looking at us and all the tiny opened houses.we suddenly bump into an old thai gentlmand who was nice enough to start talking and asked where we wanted to go. we explained we were tryin to fin the harbour for the boat to take us to Ko San, but he stressed that we shouldnt go there and soon he had us on a tuk tuk which took us to the domestic reservations office. (our 1st tuk tuk ride was fun). we turned up at the office not knowing why exactly we were there and what we wanted to do, but we ended up booking a package which included a train up to Ayutthaya, 2 night in a family guesthouse, an over night train up to chaing mai, 1 night at a hotel, 3 days trekking and then another 2 nights accomodation. we were amazed at how cheap it was.
Our 1st time getting a tuk tuk driver his stamps.
We have 20 minutes to get to our 2 hour train up to Ayutthaya and this driver asks for us to get out and go into a shop, look interested in the products and come back out, we ended up stopping at 3 different places, leaving us seconds to get to our train. i can remember dad saying to leave plenty of time for getting trains that we pay for. but we literatly run to the train. it was lucky - we asked a thai lady to show us where to go,and she actually came to the train with us. bless! we get on the wrong class cart and end up travelling with sweaty thais, children hanging out the window and with 2 fans to keep us cool. it was a nightmare. we offered the 2 children some sweets, they took the whole pack and when they were finished they threw the pack out of the window which blew straight back in further down the cart. i notice the thai men looking at us, thinking it was us, they were discusted. but we made it once again, alive! we asked a smart gentleman who spoke little english when to get off, he was very king and told us when our stop was.
we got off the train and was met by a tuk tuk driver, he took us to our little guesthouse where we were met by Sunchi, a plum and short thai guy who was so lovely. his two dos Baht and Yelhi, his daughter and wife. they couldnt have done more for us, they showed us where to go for the evening. We settled into our room and then head out to see our first Watt, Watt Ratcha Burana. It was all lit up, we were alone - it was amazing. it was our 1st sight seeing experience. we headed back and on our way we passed a restaurant, so we decided to go thai style. took our shoes off and sat on the floor. we had the view of the Watt just outside. Grant ordered seafood, and we had to ask how you ate one of the foods, it ended up being a small octupus. on our stroll back we ended up walking through our 1st night market, where they sold everything from sweets and drinks to soup in a bag to broth with wierd looking ingridients.
got back to our buddha style room. i didnt have too much of a bad nights sleep, it went slow. but morning came, and we had a really nice breakfast. mango, yoghurt, toast, tea. Sunchi asked what we were doing for the day, we wanted to rent bikes to go exploring, but that didnt go to plan, we ended up walking and then found a tuk tuk who would take us to 9 different Watts and temples for 800 baht.
(I'm writing this in my journal at 1.30am on our overnight train)
Whilst eating breakfast sorry, we meet a Spanish lad, alex. we chatted for about 2 hours, he gave us tips on oz and newzealand.he also explained how he had everything stolen from his room in NZ, (backtracking) when we went out seeing the watts we bought him a new journal, which we knew wouldnt compare to the one he had all his notes in but it was also something to say thank you for the heads up on different things.
off to see the watts, we rushed to the top of the steps to find out that there was nothing to see at the top apart from the view. coming back down was thee worst thing! it hit me that it was sooo hot i could have fainted.grant took a video of some water that he poured onto the floor and showed how fast it dried. we had to get out the sun and fast! we planned - for the other watts and temples we would get off the tuk tuk, take a photo and move to the next.i almost felt the need to say to grant for him to go on without me it was literatly unbearable. there was just no air! we made it through and when we got back to Baan Eve i demanded food straight away!
after eating grub, we decided to chill and have a chill, we then met alex for an evening meal, where we also met Yvonne, from scotland who was traveling alone. she was kind enough to give us the last of her kipp for Laos. We all ended up talking until late, and then headed off to bed.
Late breakfast.
Slept late, though breakfast and through check out. we rushed packing and got a late breakfast. we didnt want to do anything up until we had to get our overnight train up to chaing mai. so we sat up in their glass hut! where we met Andrew and Shayne, a california couple who were on their holiday, we talked, played cards and then had to set off for our train.
