Hi everyone,
We are now on the last leg of our travels so I thought I would update you with our progress.
We are now in Asia. Our first stop was Singapore but only for two nights and one day so we made the most of it.
We were staying in a nice hotel called Thompson Value Hotel, Novena. We arrived at 10pm but because of the time difference it felt like 1-2am to us, so we went to bed.
We woke up at 07:30 and went for a quick swim in the hotel pool. It was an open air pool on the roof of the hotel with a view over Singapore. Beautiful!
We were out of the room by 9am. We got the MRT (Tube) to Orchard Street where we had to buy a tourist ticket for the day. We had breakfast in a nice little cafe. Orchard street is like Oxford street in London, so we could not afford to go shopping there; Armani, Gucci, Louis Vuitton etc. Not exactly within our budget!
We then headed for the train station to buy our tickets for Malaysia. We did find out later that the bus is more direct, nevermind.
We walked to Chinatown, to explore more although it was a hot day to be walking. We had lunch in the hawker markets on Maxwell Street. It is very cheap to eat in the hawker markets. Each dish cost about 60p so we ate like kings. Lindsey had boiled dumplings soup with noodles and I had mixed meat dish with a sweet sauce.
After lunch we visited a temple. Lindsey had to cover up her legs as she was wearing shorts. The Buddha monks were chanting in their orange tunics and there was gold and mini Buddha statues everywhere!
We then made our way to a shopping mall. This was an electrical shopping mall five stories high. I was in heaven! There was a lot to see, and lots of eager salesmen trying to sell me things. I was just window shopping. The price was similar to at home but it was good to play around with expensive camera lenses and try stuff out.
We went to the famous Raffles hotel and had a Sinagpore sling. This is where the drink originates from. It was delicious. Also on the table was a bowl of monkey nuts. You just throw the empty shells onto the floor though for some strange reason, so the floor is covered with empty shells.
We had a walk around Little India then made our way back to Chinatown. We found a bar and had a couple of beers whilst we watched the ever-colourful world go by. We had dinner in a different Hawker market, then back to the bar for more drinks!! We were obviously very thirsty after all that walking.
The next day we got the train to Melaka in Malaysia.
