We Eventually Arrived in Manchester
After sittting around in BIT (Brisbane International Airport) ....waiting.....watiting.... the call was made to check in for Qantas 51 to Singapore (and to do it quickly because the flight was leaving soon). Check in finally completed and clutching our hand written FIM (the authority for the issue of our boarding passes for our connecting flights) we rushed to the gate for immediate boarding.
In Singapore there were conveniently placed airport staff who directed us towards the next step in our journey. All went well and we were issued our Singapore Airlines boarding passes which gave us the right to sit in the last two available seats positioned together on the next flight to Paris. We were going via Helsinki but when you are a day late you take what you can get.
Our final leg from Paris to Manchester was approached with trepidation. The airline for this was 'Flybe Airways'! After wending our way from one terminal to another, a bus ride then a check in gate that lead to another bus ride we were deposited on the tarmac in close proximity to an aeroplane. No need to worry about climbing the stairs to the cabin because there weren't many. It was a DC Douglas something with only two seats each side of a narrow aisle, almost no space for carry on luggage and an engine with propellor on each wing. To give it credit, we arrived in Manchester safely although I had my doubts at takeoff when there was so much vibration I thought bits would fall off. Planes have come a long way since this type of aircraft was the state of the art in passenger flight.
Dene and Nikki were there at Manchester Airport to meet us. The internet and mobile SMS are such wonderful communication tools. However, our luggage took another day and a half to catch up with us but not to worry, we had made it to the UK.
