Graham & Jane
An early start to the day so we could get to Pickering to catch the first train on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, this is one of the longest steam hauled tourist trains in the UK We boarded the train around 15mins before the train was due to leave and struggled to find a couple of seats together, it was packed.
Maybe it was Jane wearing one of the caps which kept people away from sitting beside her as by the time the train pulled out of Pickering station she was one of the few to have a spare seat. We had decided to go straight through to Whitby rather than "hop on - hop off" as many of the other passengers were doing. This journey took 1hr 45min and included major stops at Goathland where the TV series Heartland was/is filmed, and Grosmont which is where the NYMR has its main workshops, many people were getting off and exploring these facilities.
When we got off the train in Whitby we had almost 3 hrs to explore this historic fishing town. The skyline of Whitby is dominated by the ruins of the abbey, which dates back to mid 600AD, people from Iron Age, through the Celts and Romans have all left their mark on the town. The abbey flourished until the dissolution of 1539 left only the ruins we see today.
Whitby has flourished through boat building, fishing, whaling and of course smuggling. It also has its own local jewellery industry based on the Whitby Jet stone, with the coming of the railway in Victorian times the town became a tourist favorite. In literature it is famous as being the setting for Bram Stoker's Dracula and for us Aussies one of its most famous sons is James Cook.
Following the exploration and of course a nice ploughmans lunch it was time to catch the train back to Pickering and thence to York where a good dinner was had in the Old White Swan pub.
