Graeme round the world
Day 24 Mon 17th April, woke up to a beautiful morning after a lay in until 7am. The sun was out and the lamas and horses were roaming the camp. Breakfast outside and then visited a local farmhouse, where they all sleep on lama skin on the dirt floor and the house was filled with smoke to keep the place warm, very basic, but they seemed very happy people. Very enjoyable day treking down to the finish. I bought a fab Peruvian waistcoat on the way....you may see it in some of the photos if you look carefully, but it smelt of lamas and the smoke from the house it was made in so ill have to get it cleaned soon. The descent took us through the spectacular valley of Patacancha. After our 5 hour hike we finish in the town of Patacancha, where we walk though the local school, where the children are so polite and pleased to see us and we create a stampede as we share all our lunch packs, bread and fruit with them. It was a great feeling to finish and a lovely way to end it, with the children. We have lunch by the river and then say good bye to our porters and Pancho the fantastic cook, who have a 6 hour walk home, we give them each a good tip and a bag of coca leaves, so they are very happy. We take the bus back to Ollantaytambo and then catch the train for and incredibly scenic ride to Agua Calientes, with views of the fast flowing river and forest where the Inca trail goes, which is the town directly below Machu Picchu, where we spend the night, where my toilet floods the bathroom, yuk!!!!!! We visited the local hot springs to soothe our aching bodies, which was heaven :o)
