Graeme round the world
Day 55 Thursday 18th May - Up early for morning surf lesson. The beach was deserted and sunny and we all did even better today after last nights practice. In between falling in loads and getting a beating from the crashing waves, as you made my way back out to sea, I managed to catch some of my own waves and ride them into the beach, which felt amazing. The guys teaching us were typical surf dudes, so laid back and fun loving, who had labelled all the wet suits with rude name tags on the front and developed a set of surf rules that if disobeyed would involves fines such as running around the camp or surfing naked!!!! In fact when we were leaving and driving away from surf camp our guide told us to look out for the white finned wombat ....then all of a sudden he shouted "there it is" and it was one of the surf teachers running naked with a broom stick between his legs with a hat on!!!!! The good news was there were a couple of surf babes too :o))))) It was a 7 hour journey to Byron Bay but we had lunch on the way at Fredo's Pies, and sampled his world famous aligator, buffalo and emu pies, which were all so yummy :o) Arrived in Byron Bay, which is a chic hippy surfing town. Checked into the hostel and the girls on the bus were very kind to invite me to share their apartment, as I had been put in with 3 people I didn't know, then all of us went to the club opposite for some food and loads of alcohol, followed by various games on stage, which our OZ experience bus managed to win.... a surfing course, a massage, the slave auction including $50 worth of beer. The evening ended with dancing on the tables and me falling asleep fully clothed on my bed..............perfect :o)
