Got to Nadi this morning (after getting dropped off at the airport at 4am by a very generous uncle paul!
Fiji is just how you would imagine it. I'm sure it must be a third world country and its amazing! Lots of little shacks everywhere and the hostel is right on the beach.
Wandered around for a bit this morning and had fish and chips for lunch :s then a tour group was giving free rides out to their sailing boat which was moored just off the beach! So I jumped in the little speed boat and went out to the sailing boat! It was amazing, was sat there thinking how random all this is! Then 2 of the guys o the boat started playing their guitar and singing, and they were singing Take That! really made me laugh.
Tomorow its another early morning and I'll be jumping aboard another boat to take me on my week long tour around the Yasawa islands, hopefully going to see lots of crystal blue seas and white beaches! CANNOT WAIT! So will update this again in about a week when I return to the mainland. See ya!
Sept 21st
So I've been away from nadi for a week and done so much! On Sunday I travelled all the way to the top of the Yasawas on a boat which took about 4 hours. On the way there was a cyclone in the middle of the sea which we thankfully dodged! Made friends with a couple of lads from Cumbria and a girl from Leicester and we were all doing the same trip so I hade some mates for the week!
Our first stop was Coral View resort. The island was lovely, and as in everywhere in Fiji, the staff were always smiling and friendly. They welcomed us by singing and shaking our hands with a resounding 'BULA!'. Whilse on Croal view, it rained for the first day so we did some activities inside but on the second day we were taken to some caves about 40 minutes away on another island where we went cave swimming. We had to swim through a tunnel a metre underwater into a pitch black cave! it was very scary but exciting. Coral View gave you snoorkelling equipment for free so later that day I went snorkelling in the sea of the resort and it was fanstastic. Alot of the sea in Fiji is coral reefs so there were loads of tropical fish and MASSIVE clams.
The next day at lunchtime we sailied to the 'Wanna Taki' cruise boat, it was just a small cruise boat where we stayed for the night. I'd love to say we all had a great time, but 80% of people including me were ill and went to bed at 8pm! There was a fever going round which caused bad stomach upset and cramps which alot of people had or the next 3 days including me a little bit :( But I soldiered on and the next day off the 'Wanna Taki' we were taken to a spot where there were mantarays and we snorkelled with them! They were HUGE! about 2 metres across and very graceful. They had HUGE mouths which they sucked up plankton with and I was scared they would eat me!
Our next destination was Waya Lai Lai resort which again was fantastic and had a Fijian village next door. We watched some Fijian dancing in the evening and took part in a cava ceremony. Cava is a special drink made from the roots of pepper plants which the Fijians drink. It looks like dirty dishwater and tastes interesting but if you drink enough its supposed to be narcotic! Although I think you have to drink alot for that.....
The next day we went reef snorkelling a bit farther out in the ocean. The fijian guys that were with us had some dead fish and as we swam out some of the reef sharks came to say hello! They're quite small but still pretty scary. The guys would grab them by the tail so that we could stroke them!
Later that day we sailed from Waya Lai Lai to South Sea island which was tiny! It rained for the rest of the evening so we entertained ourselves but the next day we went on the 'Seaapray' sailing boat which took us to a couple of different islands. It was very choppy but the bar was free....possibly not the best combination! We started of with some champagne and got to our first island which just had a little Fijian village on it with lots of cute children running around. We did another cava ceremony and then looked around the shell market. After that we had lunch on the boat (a yummy bbq) and sailed to the next island which was the one where Tom Hanks filmed Castaway! It was very windy but beautiful and I jumped off the boat and swam to the island, where we chilled and did some snorkelling.
And thus pretty much concludes my Fijian stay. We went back to Nadi at the end of the day where I stayed 3 more nights, but this really only consisted of sun bathing and getting ready for Melbourne!
