Oktoberfest, notorious the world over and with Andy doing a years placment in Munich i couldnt really pass up on the oppertunity to spend the weekend there and at least sample the delights of the beer festival.
Landing in munich at 11pm i was greeted in arrivals by andy and we jumped on the train heading straight to the Euros hostel for drinks. i had always thought that the steryotype of lederhosen and dirndels (the womens traditional Bavarian dresses, which are awesome by the way ) were just a steryotype but it turns out there not, they are literally everywhere! Munich didn't take long to entertain when we were joined on the train by a trio of russians who had clearly been at oktoberfest all day and were hilarious!
Arriving at euros hostel i was introduced to all of Andy's collegues where i struggled to keep up with all the names and nationalitys whilst we played catch-up with jagermeister and the first of what would become far to many beers that night eventually staggering back the flat at 7am, past the builders who were just starting work as we were getting home
after a few hours sleep ew head into munich city center to meet some more people and have an explore taking in Marienplatz and its exceptional architecture. This excursion was cut hampered by the combination of a mild hangover, to many people and a rather hot day. so we made our way home for food followed by a quiet few drinks back in euros in preperation for an early start at Oktoberfest.
7am and the most unwelcome alarm saw us on the way to odeanplatz coffee in hand to meet our company for the day, Amy (NZ), Emma and Cecilia (Sweeden) then it was on to Oktoberfest itself. Unable to find a space inside one of the collossal tents we settled for a bench section in its ajoining garden area where we hailed a beer wench and orderd our first round of masses at around 9 am . What followed was a combination of beer swilling, hlaf chicken munching, singing, stomping and bench jumping accompanied by a steay trickle of people, friends and strangers, including Will and his friend lisa (US) who after waking from her slumber on the bench beside us turned out to be great fun!
by around 3pm we decided to wander around the vast funfair to find the rollercoaster which turned out to be a naff move as it loast us our place in the beer tent and all the others were overflowing as it was the last day of Oktoberfest so exceptionally busy. so we made our way to one of the many smaller beer gardens in the city for continued drinking then it was onto an irish bar which where tequilla signalled the end of most of my recolection of the remainder of the night except the very best bits eventually ending in another arrival home at 6am! all in all best days drinking ever!
i was made to pay for it the next day! waking at 12pm we headed over to amy and cecilia's place to be taken to the english gardens (one seriouly massive park) to chill out in the sun and slowly recover. aided by a dip in theEisbach river, its name doesnt lie, its f***ing freezing! and watching some guys 'surfing' on a strange manmade current/wave? i was left feeling slightly better but still a bit wobbley to say the least.
ill close by pointing out somthing that is proabbly fairly obvious, a flight home with an oktoberfest hangover is not pleasent. not pleasent at all. but i will most certainly be going back to Munich in a hurry!
