Hard to comprehend that all the festivities and build up are over and it's now time for us all to go our separate ways. Jared, Roey, Chris, Craig and Blake left in their limo for La Guardia airport at 930am for their midday flight to Miami. At 1115 eight more including Karen and Greg caught the shuttle to the station for the 1140 train back to Penn station. Together with Ros and Gary, Cale and Mitch we caught the 1215 for the 1240 train. Only ones left behind were Brad and Nicole and the girls and Gavin. More goodbyes at Penn Station then we found 33rd street exit and our pick up point for the NY2DC bus scheduled to leave at 3pm. Grabbed a sandwich, drink and nuts before boarding for our 4 and a half hour trip. Comfortable and quite relaxing journey especially as only about a dozen people on board. Water bottle and wi fi provided - what more do you expect for $30!!
Great to take in our last glimpses of New York as we head up to 41st street and into the Lincoln Tunnel, under the Hudson River and into New Jersey. Fabulous view back across the city skyline. Yet again the journey of many states as we also pass through Delaware and Maryland before reaching the District of Columbia. Despite all freeway travelling still quite scenic at times with more Autumn colouring prevalent as well as plenty of spectacular bridges/waterway crossings.
Arrived into Washington at about 715pm - first stop Union Station and we disembarked at DuPont Circle with our hotel, The Embassy Row, less than 100 metres away.
Got sorted and freshened up and Barry Lee met us in the lobby within the hour. First stop was an Irish pub around the corner for a beer and snack ( enjoyed the "sausage rolls" and pizza) then off on our evening explore of this incredibly special city. Lincoln Memorial is overwhelmingly spectacular at night - the lights on that gigantic imposing figure are awesome. Then the view down the Reflecting Pool to Washington monument is equally spectacular. Barry was a tremendously informative guide and showed us so much . Both the Korean War Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial are amazing sculptures and lit at night were eery and moving. We then crossed over Constitution Ave to the Albert Einstein monument then round to the White House. All incredible! Barry then took us to one of his favourite haunts, Old Ebbitt Grill, the oldest saloon in Washington. A beautifully ornate bar and restaurant with decor focusing on hunting. And the crab cakes and shrimp were pretty good too. Wandered back to DuPont Circle ready for bed - at about 1am! Great night!
