OMG Canada just keeps getting better! After a great nights sleep we were up and packed and enjoyed our yummy continental breakfast. We love those bagels and croissants! Farewell to the lovely Hotel Chateau de l'argoat - was great.
Headed out of Montreal over the Saint Lawrence river - trying to outsmart our GPS friend by selecting the more scenic non freeway route once again. Found ourselves still on a major freeway so stopped for petrol, bought a detailed map, got some advice from a local and made our own detours. Worked out well for a while - farming country and little towns were incredibly scenic; loved the distinctive barns, silos, farmhouses and fields of un-fenced crops as well as great views as the road followed the river. Really picturesque. Unfortunately we encountered some fairly major roadwork and an enormous semi with an horrendously wide load with escorts - this not only slowed us up but caused us to have to detour a little. Our GPS friend didn't handle it well!
Anyway we made it to Quebec !! And I think I'm in love!
Our hotel (Hotel Louisbourg) is in the old walled town - so cobblestone streets, gorgeous stone buildings and everything is vibrant and colourful. We actually had to check in around the corner at the Hotel Acadia - the valet helped us with our luggage then took our car and parked it (somewhere!).
Our room isn't that large but lovely decor - feature walls of stone.
Went for a walk around straight away to find food (what ended up a very late lunch). Plenty of pubs, cafes, shops. Touristy but gorgeous. Le Chateau Frontenac is just as magnificent in real life as I expected but the ambience created by various operatic singers "performing" nearby was amazing. (not suprisingly the most photographed hotel in the world...and we did check out inside too!) Realized why the town was buzzing with people on a Monday afternoon, with two substantial sized cruise ships in port just below. Covered quite a bit of old town including Saint John Gate and the Artillery park. We were glad to get back to our room for a bit of a rest before wandering down rue Saint Louis for a bite to eat. Must say the taxes in Canada really are a pain .....especially when 3 or 4 of them- federal, provincial, occupancy, gratuity.....does make things much more expensive!
Raym and Roey are watching Denver & Atlanta.....American football!!
