Heavy rain through much of the night and though not cold still awoke to a blustery overcast day.
After brekkiie we head off from Mission Beach for our Atherton Tablelands trek about 9am after quickly checking out Castaways Resort at the opposite end of Misison Beach (bit more up market but definitely preferred the vibe of our accommodation).
Once on the Bruce Highway travelling north we turned off near Innisfail heading inland. Despite quite heavy rain the terrain changed dramatically. We were now amongst the undulating hills of dairy country ...interspersed with sugar cane, bananas and other tropical produce. The turn off to Mungalli Creek Dairy proved quite a hairy experience due to the weather and narrow road....thankfully only 4kms! Worth the trip for delicious scones and coffee....not to mention buying some organic cheese and yoghurt! Yum!
Once back on the main road it was unfortunately too wet to detour off to any of the many waterfalls dotted along the route....particularly the recommended Millaa Millaa!
Oh well, made the most if it and kept driving through the quaint towns and villages and the ever changing agriculture. From tea plantations to avocados, various nuts, herbs and coffee! Particularly loved Yungaburra with its distinctive colourful architecture not to mention the Clifton Curtain tree - awesome! Didn't catch a glimpse of a platypus at the viewing area...oh well!
Enjoyed our pub lunch in Atherton...then on to Mareeba. Found our way to "Coffee Works" seeing as that's what this area is famous for...( Roh's coffee at Left Bower come from up here!) Great set up...despite being touristy...and coffee tasted good!
Continued on to Kuranda and Raym managed to watch most of 2nd half of Sharkies annilating Roosters in a pub while I checked out the town, the railway station and sky rail.....so we can plan for the next couple of days! Certainly looks very quaint and touristy ....but quiet as we were there once everyone had left.
Very windy drive down to the coast with various lookout vantage points and the sky rail spotted overhead- great road though.
Short drive north once meeting the coastal junction, past turn offs to Trinity Beach and Kewara before we reached Clifton Beach. Our little self contained apartment at Clifton Sands is just a block from the beach though we have beach views from the balcony . Really lovely and comfy - happy to spend three nights here! After a pre dinner wine just strolled across the road to "Coco Mojo" for tapas dinner ....just delicious!
