GoneExploring
This is our last day of adventures before going home tomorrow. We decide to visit Lydford Gorge in Devon, owned by the National Trust and the deepest gorge in the South-West. We start at the Devil's Cauldron, a wonderful, sometimes challenging, walk alongside the River Lyd through ancient woodland to this natural pot hole swirling with frothing, foaming water. We decide to forego the mile and a half walk to the waterfall, instead opting to take the car.
We decide to take the 'short and steep' approach to the Whitelady waterfall. It is wet and slippery with many steps so is quite arduous but the 100 foot waterfall at the end is quite spectacular. The 'long and easy' walk to the exit is not exactly that! I suppose we should remember when we go down that we always have to come back up and although we had no steps, the path was quite steep.
As it is only half an hour away, we decide to visit Buckland Abbey before we go home. A fascinating National Trust property with a varied history, starting its life as an Abbey to Cistercian Monks in the 13th century then becoming the home of Sir Francis Drake. Beautiful grounds and an interesting property and another cream tea in the tea shop!
