Outta Snookyville. Fabulous beaches, too bad about the creeps.
Made it out of Sihanoukville with all my parts and my money. After doing a little research I found out that this place is pretty damn violent - so many episodes of robbery and assault. The woman who was hit over the head is still unidentified and still in a coma in PP. The Hotel owner where I was staying was telling me the police came by with a photo of her but it was impossible to even get an idea of what she might have looked like the injuries were so severe!!! Horrible. I guess they did not get the guys. Lots of other incidents as well - most have not been investigated by the Police and if they have they are quickly reclassified as motor vehicle accidents. A Football player for the BC LIons was killed here a couple of years ago - beaten to death and they have just recently closed the case as a moped accident.
Decided, after the scary stuff in Snookyville, to not tempt fate and the moto mafia and I took the bus back to PP last night. Sat beside a sex tourist - saw him and his friend - two middle aged guys from England, saying their long good byes to their Cambodian rentals - yuck. I had lots of questions for him - I am fascinated by the creepiness of this phenomenon. He told me he is married, two kids, works just outside of London and has come to Snookyville for the last 7 years after the same number of years in Thailand. Thailand got too expensive so now he comes to Cambodia for 4-5 weeks every winter. His wife stays home and he has a 'beach holiday"". He knows nothing about Cambodia - has not been anywhere but the PP airport and the Hostess bars and Snookyville. Tried to convince me that he is different than the others cause he really falls in love with these women and they with him even though they cannot communicate verbally........he thought the women in England expect too much from men and it was just perfect with the socially disadvantaged!!!!! They are at least grateful for all he has to offer!!!! I could go on and on about what I have seen here but.......needless to say it was an interesting 5 hour bus ride and he wondered what evil Karma was paying him back by having been assigned the seat next to me - not really, he poured his creepy deviant heart out to me as usual.......
Oh yeah funny thing happened the night before. A kid working at the Hotel came to me and asked me if I could show him how you get money out of an ATM using a card. Very little English but the story unfolded - his friend "'found" a Bank of America Visa on the beach. He gave/sold it to Buddy. Buddy wondered if you just put it in the machine and money would come out. We had a little teaching lesson about cards and ATM's and cancellations and the fact that the machine may call the police etc etc. He gave me the card and together we emailed Bank of America and I gave him the little card pieces as a souvenir. He was thrilled with the lesson and was so happy to not be caught with the card. Somehow he had hoped for so much more, but in true Cambodian fashion - was joyful with what is.
Arrived into PP in the dark - hiked to the GH I had stayed in and no room at the INN. The owner got his little brother to drive me around on his motorbike and I found a dive and bought a tkt out of town.......
