Cold and drizzle in the afternoon but in the morning on boat had a nice lecture about the history and people of Belgium. In the late 19th and early 20th century 3 million left Antwerp for U S A via Red Star line. About 60 per cent of population in the North which also has more wealth. Originally the south had more wealth but the religious wars drove many merchants out and then the coal mines became depleted.
Much of Belgian history has been of conquest--Romans , Vikings , Franks,hapsburg , Spain, Napoleon and then Dutch. Declared independence in 1830 from Netherlands. Then conquest by Germans. Now a nation of nearly 11million and home to NATO and to European Union.
Antwerp voted by New York times as 4th most attractive in world. No bridges but two tunnels. Home of painter Reuben who began with church painting before nudes. His fat and white models represented the wealthy.
Has catholic churches and a cathedral with a single tower that contains several architectural styles.
A is a very walk able city with many chocolate shops and restaurants
Belgium became noted for its beer because the water was dangerous to drink without boiling. The nearly 300 beers are served in glasses distinctive to each brand.
Many street lamps have Virgin Mary. When city wanted to tax houses with lamps because they were wealthy residents argued that the lights were to honor Mary and escaped the tax.
Interesting statue of man throwing hand located in city market square. Story is that a giant controlled access to city and threatened travelers to pay him or lose a hand. A Roman soldier killed the giant and threw his hand in the river, thus opening Antwerp to trade and prosperity.
Had lunch in Antwerp -- fish soup with mussels and shrimp and a sandwich with raw ground meat in sauces and herbs, called a martini. Of course had a beer and some Belgian fries. Sharon had white asparagus soup and a sandwich.
Afternoon had tea and cake on ship . Evening had a cocktail hour and farewell dinner.
