Sorry we haven’t written in a while we’ve been very busy sunning it up in Thailand!! Since we last wrote our journal we have been to Phuket, Phi Phi Islands and we are now in Koh Lanta – another island in the middle of the Andaman Sea.
So we left Langkawi on the 19th Oct, after a boozy last night on the duty free’s – this place will be sorely missed!! It took almost 12 hours by boat, taxi and bus to arrive in Phuket, but it was well worth it. We were planning on only staying for 3 nights but ended up staying longer, we had a pool, a pool bar, an awesome beach, cracking weather and it was cheap?! We’re definitely coming back here at some point in the future – I think this was our favourite place yet. We didn’t stay in the main area of Patong, mainly because it was a bit too expensive, though a place we wished we’d visited if we’d had more time, too many other places to visit! We stayed in between Karon and Kata beach where there was a strip of bars, restaurant, internet cafes, shops and our favourite, Dino Park. We reverted back to childhood for a night of crazy golf – it was a glorious victory for Gem, who much to Chris’ dismay won by one shot, thanks to her hole in one!!!!!
While we were there we did a refresher course for our diving, it was a great day out, had breakfast and lunch on a lush boat, the weather was great and we saw lots of cool things – everything was so bright and colourful! The Irish dive master, Damien, helped us out with our buoyancy and taught us how to dive in and out of these cement block structure things on the seabed, it wasn’t easy but as well as seeing lots of cool things, we learnt lots too.
On the Monday night we went to a Lady boy show in the main area of Patong, it was pretty surreal. Needless to say we were a bit apprehensive before the show, so we drank lots of vodka for Dutch courage. They were all ‘after-op’ ladies, properly converted, you know, no bits!! They looked so real, some of them were wearing suspenders and had their tats out! We had our picture taken with a few of them outside, you wouldn’t believe it, they all line up outside waiting for money in exchange for a photo! The show consisted a lot of miming to songs and a lot of outrageous outfits, Tina turner had to be ‘Simply the Best’ as he/she cavorts around the stage in the typical short white number.
On Tuesday afternoon we booked into the 9 in 1 Safari. We got to ride down a canal in a ‘nature canoe’, which was extremely funny despite the heat. There were only 6 of us on the safari, the other 4 were Spanish, but it was great afternoon. Our guide and driver took us to a rubber plantation to see how rubber is tapped from the trees – how educational?! We then watched an elephant show, 3 of the baby Asian elephants performed tricks, and one of them gave Gem a massage, and kisses on the face. It was pretty cool, the elephant used his trunk to suck her face, it was all muddy and bristly! We then went on a trek riding on the elephants. Our elephant was a bit mental deciding to eat all in its path – whilst climbing up and down the dodgiest bit of terrain he could find. We then watched how Thai people trained the monkeys to pick coconuts from the trees; we had a cooking lesson, an ox-cart ride and had a look at how they farm rice. Finally, we saw some Thai-boxing, for this Chris got in the ring with the professional boxer and knocked him around a bit!!
After a jam packed couple of days we left Phuket with a number of experiences and big dent in the budget but it was well worth it! Next stop Koh Phi Phi…….
