And so here we are in sunny Yeppoon with Chris’ family, enjoying lazing around and just saving a bit of dollar! We haven’t yet ventured far from Yeppoon but have found activities to keep us entertained in the mean time.
Not far from Michelle’s house is a 5* resort called Rydges, we’ve been there twice already; they have a swimming pool and other facilities there. So one afternoon we snuck through the underground car park and used their pool… whoops!!! Yes I know, what a bunch of tramps we are!!! The second time it was Michelle’s birthday and her boyfriend Stu very kindly paid for dinner for the six of us, including Michelle’s Mum and Dad - Cheryl and Terry. We dined at the Japanese restaurant there, and as neither of us had ever tried Japanese before, and Chris not liking either eggs or fish, and both suffering from a hangover (surprise surprise!) we were a little dubious! But it was great, Chris very bravely ate all the raw salmon, tuna and snapper despite his dislike of fish, Gem tried fish eggs on a piece of radish, and we also tried lobster - Chris even got to pick the little blighter to send it to its death! It was quite a posh restaurant, to be honest we felt a little scruffy, but we had a great time?! I did wonder why the room emptied when we walked in……
We’ve been invited over the last 2 weeks or so to numerous dinners and BBQ’s to meet other members of the family, it’s almost as big as Chris’ family back home, but I think we’re just about sure of who is related to who, although one member of their family Andrew, thought Gem was the relative for the most of one night!!! Talking of Andrew, he’s our age, well 22, and he was at the BBQ his parents held, Marty and Narelle. He had invited some of his friends along and after everyone had gone home we stayed and went out on the town with him and his mates. Yeppoon’s a fairly quiet town so there’s only 1 main pub that is open till 1am called The Strand, and a nightclub called The Coast which is open till 5am…..lets just say The Coast is Australia’s very own version of Prague Junction!!!!!! But no dripping ceiling, and no cheesy songs much to our disgust, all they play is Techno! But that didn’t stop us rolling in a 5am after a very long and disorientated walk home in the dark?! Oh yeah and there’s no kebabs here, just a bakery down a back alley that stays open with what can only be described as a caged door to keep out the drunks…mmm….pies!!!!!!
When u look at the photo’s you’ll notice a half built house, Michelle’s brother has just bought 220 acres of land out here for a very reasonable sum of money, so they are currently building their own house. We took the pictures to show u just how big their plot is, its huge, they’re going to farm cattle on it eventually as it’s right out in the bush. Talking of out in the bush, Michelle’s house is just off the road out in the bush in a place called Hidden Valley and apparently they see snakes and spiders all the time! So far we’ve only seen one spider, which was about as big as your hand, and they’re not poisonous but they do bite?! We haven’t seen any live snakes yet, only the dead ‘yellow belly black’ at the bottom of the drive, which is poisonous and can kill a child, adults just get really sick. So we’re being a bit cautious with everything we do, you have to shake the washing out before you take it off the line, watch where you step in the grass etc, its so much fun!!
We’ve done a few visits to local sights, such as the ‘Heritage village’ where we learnt all about Australian history and they’ve made an ickle village…very educational. We also went to the Capricorn caves, the pictures don’t really do it justice as it was pitch black, and some of it we had to walk through by candlelight. It was quite funny at one point, this old man fell over, Leon you would of been crying with laughter!
Michelle works in a day-care centre here in Yeppoon, and Chris made his debut appearance as Santa! His 45 minute stint included interaction with the ‘under 3’s’ handing out presents and a lot of ‘ho ho ho-ing’. The poor under 1’s were screaming and they didn’t like Santa very much at all! It was really funny the older toddlers didn’t even realise that poor old Santa’s beard kept falling off, and that his belly was made from sheets and pillows, or that his accent was ever so slightly different! Chris performed to the highest level and done himself proud! After we all managed to stop laughing, and Chris was de-suited, we went to a xmas party of Terry’s at his welding works. Every year they have a competition where everyone has to make a vehicle out of a power tool of their choice and they have a race, it’s the fastest over 100m! It was hilarious as there were a number of minor casualties. We had a drop-saw skateboard contraption, 2 sand-belts motoring a kart, and a bike made form an angle grinder, and you had to race until the extension cord ran out!!!! It provided a few giggles that’s for sure. Then as the beers started flowing the motorised sofa came out and we all took it for a spin down the road. It was so funny, cars kept pulling over, and staring in disbelief as a sofa shot past them on the road! Michelle and Gem also took it for a spin on their own, only to find out it had been put in 3rd gear and it kept stalling, and swerving out into the road, and Terry had to go run after them! It must of looked a bizarre sight, 2 girls driving a sofa and a guy running behind. One car full actually pulled over to take a photo….classic!
And finally in our great escapades, one of the rellies here, Dean, plays in a band and on Saturday we watched his gig in the ‘hippy garden’ along with his brother Andrew and a mixture of their friends. The previous night after the xmas welding works party we met up with Dean and Andrew and we shaved off Deans hair - it was previously shoulder length, and we balded him after he‘d had a few! No doubt he thoroughly regretted it the next day especially with his gig in the evening…. whoops.
So that’s about all for now, we’re just off to a BBQ this evening, and tomorrow we’re going on a mini adventure to a place called Fraser Island, about a 4/5 hours drive from here. We’re going with Dean and Andrews Mum and Dad - Marty and Narelle for a coupe of days and staying in a 2 bed villa. So we’ll be back Wednesday and we’ll update u more then.
Take care and high fives!!!!
