No news yet, just thought the page looked horribly depressing all blank!
I have nothing very interesting to say for myself yet - I am packing and getting all my US dollars together ready for the horrific 22 hour journey on Sunday and Monday. Plane to Washington DC, wait 8 hours, plane to Miami, then plane to Tegucigalpa (at least I hope so - a plane overshot the runway a few weeks ago so fingers crossed mine won't be diverted).
Then I get picked up and dropped off at a little hotel with the other volunteers and will try to see some of Tegucigalpa's sights. On Tuesday we all head off to be induced (given a few cultural dos and don'ts) and then packed off in a bus for a 3 hour drive to La Esperanza, the town where I'm volunteering.
At the moment I know very little - it's a small place, only 15,000 people but is very popular with volunteers and there will be plenty of support around so I won't be getting totally lonely! I'm staying in a local family's house who will cook for me (they're in for a shock when they see how much I eat...) and who don't speak very much English so my Spanish is going to get some shock-therapy.
The project I'm working in is, as far as I can tell, a day center for the local children. There are no schools and certainly no formal curriculum so the emphasis is placed on volunteer groups to provide not only education but entertainment and even medical care. Details at this stage are patchy and I'll probably end up helping in whichever area needs most work - this could mean distracting the children with games, trying to teach them a little English or even helping out in the medical center. I'll just have to wait and see and stay flexible!
I'll try and write entries and post photos as often as I can but internet access may be patchy (although I know I will have some). Please do comment if you can - I'm sure the homesickness will hit at some stage and your support will mean a lot. Thanks in advance and I look forward to seeing everyone when I get back!
