We got up collapsed the tent and headed to Katherine gorge. We looked around the tourist information centre for a bit then hired a twin canoe and headed out. Katherine gorge consists of many individual gorges we finished the first then had to get out and walk around a load of boulders to more canoes. We saw one that was drifting down stream, which someone hadn't tied up properly, we tried to grab it but unfortunately got there too late and watched it drift down the rapids. We grabbed another and headed up the second gorge, there were amazing sights around, massive gorge sides and caves. We had been told before we boarded that there were freshwater crocodiles in the area and not to approach them, we had also been told that we could bank anywhere apart from where there was a sign stating there were crocodiles eggs in the area….this turned out to be pretty much every place we could have stopped other then the sharp gorge face. Since the fine was $1000 for going on the area or $4000 if you accidentally stepped on an egg we decided not to risk it so just stayed in the canoe looking around for crocs and not seeing any.
Then we got to the end of the second gorge right next to a massive white spider. The time was getting on so we pulled our canoe up, had a picnic on the rocks and looked up into the third gorge before deciding we didn't have time and heading back. We had a nice slow row back and popped into a couple of caves entrances on the way to see some bats. When we reached the docking area we pulled in and got out and left the canoe in the hands of the guy there. We then started to walk up the stairs, half way up I stopped as I had heard something, I looked down and on the other side of the stairs there was a brown snake around a meter and a half long. I nearly wet myself, thankfully so did the snake and he legged it the opposite way and slithered up a wall and into the bushes. We quickly climbed the rest of the stairs, dumped our life jackets and owes and rushed off back to the car…….It wasn't until we got to the car that we thought it might have been nice to warn the guy who took the canoe off us that there was a snake about, oops, we considered going back but……there was a snake back there so we quickly drove off.
We got back on the Stuart Highway and headed north to Edith Falls. We arrived and found a pitch and set up camp. We then had a walk down to the Waterfall, which was near the campsite. It was lovely, it had a massive lake under it which you could swim in, however since we could see the crocodile warning sign from the sign saying you could swim, we decided to give it a miss. We headed back to the campsite and started cooking curry for dinner under the stars. While we were cooking we noticed some red eyes staring at us through the trees and a dark dog figure, we assumed it was a dingo but didn't go for a closer look. It circled us for a half an hour and then disappeared. We quickly ate our curry then and then headed to the showers to cool down before bed. I was brushing my teeth when I heard a little squeal from next door, there was a green frog on the toilet seat in the women's, needless to say Rachel decided to use a different toilet. I then headed to the shower and heard a scream, the lights had gone off on Rachel in the women's. Thankfully she had a torch near her, needless to say I reactivated the timer on mine very quickly. After cooling down we headed back to the tent.
