OK, so while I spend an extra week in Madrid waiting for my laptop I figured I might give writing this on my phone a shot. It really has been too long since I update and so much has happened.
I continued on to Vienna with Mat and Jake, the two English guys I had met in Venice. As I think I left off in my last entry, we had caught a 10 hour overnight bus and got drunk off revolting cheap carton wine. It was still quite tough to get a decent sleep, but we got some and when I woke we were just half an hour from our destination and I was surprisingly not feeling that bad. One of the best cures to a hangover is getting out and doing s*** anyway, and what we needed to do was find our hostel.
It actually proved to be quite easy which was nice. We were staying at one of the 3 Wombat's in Vienna. We got there at something like 7 or 8 in the morning and were lucky enough that our room was already available. It was almost like getting a free night. We had showers and went straight to bed.
The guys had just 3 nights before they were off to Poland. I as always was completely open. Those 3 days honestly were mostly just drinking. We barely even did any touristy stuff. On that first day the guys left while I was still asleep so I actually did go out and have a look at the palace which was quite close. I wasn't expecting when I got there to see a massive Christmas tree surrounded by Christmas markets. It was really quite amazing and one of the most festive things I've ever experienced. Stall among stall of Christmas decorations, lollies, trinkets, gingerbread and of course gluhwein and punsch. It was only a shame that I was by myself, it really felt like something that would be better experienced with others. But I proceeded to walk around and get some gluhwein anyway.
The next day the guys wanted to watch some soccer so we went to an Irish pub they had discovered the previous day. I tagged along, not too bothered by the soccer but found myself actually getting quite into it. The food and beer at this pub was really good too. So good in fact that we stayed there basically the whole day and the whole next day too. We did also check out a bit of the nightlife while there and even went to a pretty decent Aussie bar. So Aussie they even sold Vegemite on toast. We ate at some nice local restaurants too, so it we didn't entirely miss the Vienna experience.
It's probably worth noting too that on a couple of days it was snowing as we were walking around. While driving through Switzerland was the first time I saw snow, this was the first time I had seen it actively snowing. So that was cool. One other highlight was that the pool table in the bar in our hostel was broken so that we always got free games. Much pool was played.
This seems like a rather disjointed entry because I'm really just trying to remember what we did. I remember one night we bought a bunch of vegetables and chicken broth and despite not really knowing what we were doing managed to make a pretty decent soup. Something a bit healthier for a change.
All in all it was a fun few days. The hostel was kinda crap though despite the free pool. Felt more like a hotel and our room was on the 7th floor which was annoying. So when the guys left for Poland I booked 4 more nights in a hostel just a bit down the road. And this hostel would end up being one of my best ever hostel experiences and easily in the best 3 hostels I've stayed in so far. It was also the start of actually doing some touristy stuff in Vienna.
Phew. Well writing this on my phone wasn't too bad. Hands are cramping though. I wait a bit before the next entry I think.
