I had had enough of Italy -the heat and the bad roads and decided to get out. But i wanted to visit the Dolomites before leaving.
It was a pretty drive through fields and hills. Villa Franca was a nice town and it seemed strange going through Verona again. It makes a change to recognise things instead of the constant unknown.
Coming into the foothills of the Dolomites I was desperately looking for somewhere nice to stop. It is made so difficult to stop by the rivers. Then I saw some people down by a big pebbly river where I think I had gone wrong anyway. Turned down this narrow lane with a tight metal chickane barrier. Breathed in a wiggled through and then over a planked bridge with another chickane the other side. How do you spell chicane?
A sharp turn down a steep stoney track to the river. It was delightful. Parked in the shade and we had a wander around and a paddle and I had a wash - I had been wild camping for the last 5 nights. So refreshing after the last few days. I was concerned that The van may have trouble returning up the steep stoney path but it was fine.
Eventually made my way to delightful Cortina d'Ampezzo. They Winter Olympics were held here in the fifties.
Took the first sign I saw for a campsite and was lucky to find Camp Dolomiti.
€15 per night and no charge for the new Miele washing machine.
Surrounded by 3000 metre mountains with some snow on top.
Found myself a nice spot by some pine trees. So happy to have some shade and breeze.
It also helps to have some nice friendly helpful neighbours.
Heaven.
The picture is of the walk from the campsite to the Cortina.
