From elephants to ladyboys this place has it all. With only a few short days in Phuket, we already seem to have endless stories & experiences to treasure forever. Unlike the tourist hype that talks about the likes of Koh Phi Phi being the most destined island, we found Koh Phuket (because it is infact an island, albeit a large one) to be much more than a mere passing point connecting one island to another. Whether it be biking around the coast, through the jungle & up over the mountains or beaching it in Patong with a visit to heaven from a Thai massage, Phuket was sure to give us a real taste of the Adaman Coast, Thailand.
While Phuket town holds a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere & plays host to a great number of traditional Thai restaurants, Patong is where it's at for nightlife & pure madness; quite literally anything can happen here! Our first full day revolved around a trip to Patong by local bus. Within the hours we were there we managed to come into contact with a baby lema on the street, take a wrong turn into a working massage parlour (looking similar to the scene from Taken & an image in itself I'll never forget!), discover a place where any lay man of any age can shoot a gun provided they have a few Baht in their pocket & of course we ran into a few ladyboys & go go girls as the day turned to night. Our second day involved much less chaos. I could have spent a lifetime taking in the Karon beach's golden sands & calm, warm waters. But south we headed, doing a loop of Phuket island passing many viewpoints & elephant crossings. You can't help but feel like a true traveller with the freedom of an open road on a budget hired scooter with absolutely no sense of direction. What an incredible day. If it couldn't have been better, my beautiful Californian-come-Aussie girl Hayley peered around the corner of Famous' roof top bar to greet us at sunset for one big catch up before having to dash for her flight to Chang Mai, man I still miss Australia. But from sushi to shopping & the pleasantly polite people of Phuket, it's been an awesome first few days of the Adaman. Next, onto Phi Phi!
