Well this is my first attempt at blogging... but after being very disorganised and writing emails about a month after things happened and trying to remember exactly what i have done... i thought this was the only option! So here goes...
I arrived in Buenos Aires less than a week ago on Wednesday. I have to admit on the seemingly never ending journey over from Sydney i had a LOT of uh oh what am i doing moments... and suddenly the decision to do everything by myself didn't seem like such a good idea!! But i arrived safely and the last few days have run relatively smoothly, helped a large part by contacts, friends of friends (of friends) who have really gone out of their way to help me.
When i arrived on Wed, slightly disorientated (i left Sydney at 10 in the morning on Wed, and arrived in Buenos Aires at 10 in the morning on Wed... despite the 13 hour flight!) and was met by Jon, my first contact, who very kindly picked me up and took me to the hostel (helping me with my suitcases and explaining a bit more about the city, most of which probably didn't stay too long in my tired little brain) - which was much appreciated. Luckily the hostel was really nice - not something that you can count on, whatever the pictures or reveiws on hostel world are - and after freshening up and chatting to the girls in my room i felt a lot better.
I spent most of the first day just taking it very easy - i didn't venture more than a few steps from the hostel! But the next few days i spent familiarising myself with the city, and realising that there were going to be some things i needed to adapt to... in that things just don't necessarily always work... your sim card MIGHT send text mesages but it might not, the bus MIGHT stop but it might not, the shop MIGHT be open but it might not.. you get the picture! Luckily my time in spain has prepared me for this! People are extremely friendly though, and i am very glad that i have my spanish as i think i would have struggled without. So far my first impressions of the city is that it is crazy but i like it!
My hostel is right in the centre and the number of people makes London look like a small village! But the city has got a good buzz about it, and i know it is what everyone says, but it really does feel european. I´ve explored San Telmo, the tango district, and Palermo with its cool bars and resturants, and Recoleta the upmarket area with the ladies in their fur coats! Starting the flat search now as well so looking forward to getting that sorted. Have been a few interesting ones so far - the one sharing with a circus performer (swing included) or the tiny dark bedroom at the top of the narrow spiral staircase.. but they have character to say the least!
But that is my focus at the mo and then i can really see what this city has to offer!
