Gillon Duguid's Travels
Hey well its just over 3 months since i arrived here in Napier. its been a great experience but have decided on a change of sceneary.
its been a very hard decision but am moving to Queenstown in 2 more weeks and looking forward to starting my new job down there which is different from what i am doing now. It again will be another challange but after 3 months learning and experiencing napier it is time for the next chapter in my travels.
Napier has been a great experience and has its pros and cons. i am writing this tonight to note what i have experienced here and not to dwell on things i have not enjoyed! these things are the reason i am moving on but also that i only have a 1 year visa here so i want to experience more of what NZ has to offer and find where i am happiest.
SO the highlights. Firstly moving here, somewhere i didnt know anyone was alot harder than i thought it would be. People are friendly but moving somewhere where there are very little transient people it is alot harder to settle than i imagined. someone relatively early on told me it would take maybe a year or even 2 before isettled. i in my impatience didnt beleive them but oh how right i now think they are.
i count myself as extremely lucky to have found a suitable flat after my first week and move in with Phill 'Loppy' Dol and Corey 'the hack' Charlton. those two guys became my initial social life and kept me buyoed as i tried to make the transition to NZ life. although they play for the enemy tarradale and i, the champions in waiting - Port Hill United - they are both good guys and i hope now life long friends.
So i did say highlights so here goes:
Attending Art Deco Weekend and watching all the old cars and see the place transformed like I was in Back to the Future.
Experiencing Napier night life!!
Going to the Wellington 7s courtesy of Gemma Scott and having a drunken day / night out in the capital. Could easily have been Edinburgh on a Dalziel Cup final bus trip.
Going to see Rod Stewart at The Mission Winery and having a cracking day and night in the crowd even though i did neturn home with 1 flipflop and only half my belongings.
Going to my first Super 15 game at Mclean park to see the Chiefs V the Crusaders.
Doing a Bicycle Wine Tour and making it home in 1 piece.
Playing for the Mighty Port Hill and getting good banter at training.
Visiting Taupo and Rotorua on a spontaneous car trip for the weekend and speeding down the luge beating corey with time to spare.
Obviously one of my best weekends was when i visited paul and marianne in queenstown and loved it so much decided to take a job down there.
someone once showed me that- we do not need to know how or where but there is one question that we should all ask whenever we start anything 'what am i doing this for?'
its going to be an interesting 2 weeks to go and will be hard to say goodbye as it always is. but the boat waits for no man and i hate being late.
goodnight
gillon
