Leaving Cuenca we spent allday on a bus to get back out to the coast to a town called Puerto Lopez to go Whale Watching.
Puerto Lopez... Hmmm not a great township, but well worth the visit. We paid just $20 for a day trip out into the Pacific Ocean on a rickety old boat in choppy conditions to seek out the biggest creatures to of ever graced this earth, the blue whale. WOW, took my breath away, is defo a highlight. We found a pod of 4 which really put a show on for us, jumping out of the water and splashing and flapping tails, we got so close to them and to try and comprehend the actual size is mental, an adult weighing upto 150tonnes, right next to you is spectacular. Then as we were heading back, thinking things could not get any better we spotted a mother and baby, which just topped it off. The baby (still huge) was very active and playfull as the mother swam aside tail slapping. Amazing and not surprisingly very difficult to catch on camera, but hopefully a few goods ones. I could of spent allday watching the Whales and gone back the next day. However the next day found us visiting Aqua Blanca, a village and museum which I am sure was very interesting, but our main interest was the Sulphur hot pools. It seems we have been in hot springs alot on this trip and could not miss them. We practically had the pool to ourselves and it is a very pretty setting. We got stuck in and covered ourselves with the mud, surprising being sooo dirty can make you feel so clean.. Very refreshing and awesome for the skin (especially the sunburn).
Again leaving the coast behind, and again on an overnight bus we headed to Quito. Back to altitude at almost 3000mtrs above sea level, and almost over the Equator back into the Northern Hemisphere for the first time in about 10months. We have spent the day in search of a trip out to the Galapagos. This is totally blowing the budget and as much as it pains us to part with so much $$ we are leaving on a 4 day trip tomorrow. It is a dream come true and we only hope it is going to be worth every cent. So keep posted for the update.
Miss you all lots, the countdown to coming home really will be on soon......xxxxxxx
