Can you say "Au Zan Ga Ta"?
That's the name of a famous trail near the city of Cusco. It's a 4-5 days horses trail featuring some of the most beautiful views of Peru.
The trail begins in a god forsaken village, with a short walk to the area where the horses await.
Then each person gets a horse and the riding starts. On The first day we rode a few hours and already saw some lovely views of snowy mountains, Alpacas, flowing icy rivers and green plants everywhere.
At the end of the day we got to a mud house and spent the night there. I mean, spent the COLD night there... Did I mention it was cold?
Just a bit after we went to sleep we heard sounds of a mouse that was spending the night with us, apparently... In the morning the noises were gone and we discovered that Shlomi killed it by crushing it under the mattress... An honest mistake.
Later on we found out that Shlomi's horse died during the night, so we all started to fear him a bit... Killing 2 animals in one night, that's creepy...
Our journey went on smoothly and we found ourselves riding in incredible scenery and huge mountains surrounding us. The horses were user-friendly and we enjoyed the ride. Of course our asses hurt at the end of the day, but that's the price you have to pay for having someone else walking for you...
We arrived at our second hut early so we decided to climb a mountain nearby without the horses. The climb was nice at first, but then it became very difficult. Not only was it steep and extremely cold, but it was also the altitude (over 4000m) that was making it terribly hard to breathe. We managed to get to the snowy top of the mountain and caught a small snow storm on the way. The view was incredible, it was definitely worth the climb!
After conquering the top, we went down and made our way to a beautiful lagoon nearby. The lagoon gave us a perfect reflection of the snowy mountain and glacier behind it. It was almost like a painting, but was cold enough to feel real.
After having some fun near the lagoon we went to sleep in the second hut. This time it wasn't made of mud, but there was no electricity so we went to sleep early :) Once again - A cold cold night...
The third day was very exciting, as we were about to get to the hot springs! Finally something that resembles a shower...
We started the day with a few hours walk to another beautiful lagoon. This lagoon had many small "islands" in it made of some sort of weed, it was sponge like and a lot of fun to jump on... So we did :)
After a nice lunch break near the lagoon we headed on to our destination - the hot springs!
It was way too hot to enter, so we had to channel some cold water from the river into it to make it better. We bought some wine and snacks and things got a bit crazy... We spent about 4 hours in the water singing and dancing... We left the hot springs when it was already dark and dinner was ready.
The last night was the coldest one and it was really hard for me to sleep... It was right after the hot springs, so it felt even colder. The last day was just a 3 hours ride back to the village, lunch and then a bus back to Cusco.
It was a wonderful trek and we had a great time together. Can't wait to get to the famous Huayhuash trek in Huaraz!
Adios for now...
Gilad.
