Arrived in Porto yesterday afternoon for a 3 night stay and what a wonderful apartment we have overlooking the Douro river, the Eiffel bridge and the famous Port houses of Portugal. Only negative was the 3 flights of very steep stairs to get up but once here as you can see from the photos, the struggle was worthwhile. Lunch last night in a restaurant was interesting with no English spoken at all. Part of the fun of travel.
Porto is the second largest city in Portugal with a population of about 2 million people. It was and old Roman port city and has been a major port in this part of the world. The city centre is a UNESCO world heritage site and if course it's most famous export is Port wine. The Eiffel bridge that you see in the photos was built by Gustave Eiffel of Eiffel Tower fame in the 1840's. it looks like it was his practise run for the more famous landmark in Paris.
The trip was about 320kms from Sintra and we stopped in Obidos, an old walled village for some shopping- cork handbags for the girls - and Nazarre, a town on the coast for lunch.
Today is Robyn's birthday and she is selecting our itinerary today which I think includes parts of the city centre which is a short walk from our apartment. Weather here had been great with temps in the mid to high 20s every day.
Europe is such an amazing diverse place. 10 days ago we were in Amsterdam and today in a such a different place physically, climatically and of course culturally. We will keep having a ball.
