It poured with rain for 3 days when we arrived in Cairns, which for obvious reasons didnt give us a great first impression. We weren't ready to give up the sun, our tans were fading and we're still only equipped for the summer. Putting our positive heads on though we headed into town to book the Great Barrier Reef trip we had planned all along, only 2 hours later we left with a Reef trip, a sailing trip to Whitsundays, 3 days on Fraser Island and a zoo day to cuddle Koalas. Yes we got carried away, but it was all at such a bargain price we couldn't say no, plus how often do you get to visit the other side of the world.
So the next day we got ourselves geared up for the Great Barrier Reef - my must do for Australia. The weather was pretty grotty but the reef was an hour out so we were hopeful the sun would be shining out there. The sun didn't show, in fact neither did the reef as the trip got cancelled due to rough seas. We were both beyond gutted, we've managed to do everything we wanted on this trip so this was a low blow to have it taken away. Instead we went to the cinema to cheer ourselves up!
Although still disappointed we began looking forward to Whitsundays, as it was another chance to see the reef. It rained the whole bus journey to Airlie Beach so we quickly prepared ourselves for another cancellation. Luckily karma was on our side and the sun came out just in time for an amazing sailing trip to the Whitsundays islands.
It was brilliant, the sun, the crowd, the crew all made it a great 3 days out at sea. We went to around 4 reef snorkelling spots and the world heritage Whitehaven beach for some posing. The sand there is 98% Cilicia so we all got involved and washed our hair, jewellery and teeth with the wet sand. A very random thing to do but it definitely works.
The snorkelling was incredible too and we met some amazing fish and sea life. Not quite the same as the great barrier I'm sure but that's defo given us a reason to return in the near future!
