We arrived in Fiji amidst the tsunami warnings and were bombarded with people trying to sell us packages and accommodation which we had luckily already sorted out! We found our bus and headed straight to our hostel called Horizon which wasn't the nicest place we could have stayed but we dumped our bags and headed to the hostel next door where we had a really nice dinner and some cocktails (thought it was only appropriate!) And that night they had traditional bula dancing which I decided/ got told to come and get involved in!! It was a completely different culture already as we were based in the middle of nowhere and they were all wearing hula skirts and flowers behind their ears..fire dancing and hula dancing! It was all really fun!
The next day we head to the ferry terminal where we got our first awesome adventures boat to a place called long island and where we met the guys again...we got a package that was called a seven night bula combo as on the islands there is only one accomodation and you have to eat their food! So you are in a catch 22 situation, and for all of the nicer islands you have to pay extra on arrival so it all worked out to be quite expensive!!
Anyway, so we arrived at long island and met up with the guys which was really nice and had our first meal which was a fish stew and rice..not really any of our cups of tea but we ate what we could! We then went snorkelling and saw some good fish and coral and then made baskets out of palm leaves!! Reanne and I were very proud of ours as we made them ourselves..lucy on the otherhand was happy for them to make hers!!! We then made palm bracelets and chilled out for the rest of the day!
That night our dinner was chicken bone and rice...they spared none of the chicken and I ended up without an ounce of meat and just bone, not the nicest! After dinner Reuben wanted to show us how they party so he did a dance and fire show which was slightly awkward as he kept dropping the fire and at one stage set his hair on fire!! Then he made all of us get up and dance with him and he was the first person to teach us the bula dance!! We then went and played cards in the room and ended up drinking quite late till we decided it was a good idea to go into the sea...but when we got there the tide was so far out we walked for quite a while out and nothing!! So we chilled in the room as the heavens decided to open and absolutely soak us!!! We also found a little doggy who was really cold in the rain so I sat him inside by the door and played with him until it stopped!!
The next day Reuben gave us a Fijian lesson where we learnt some of the language and phrases!! He was pretty excited that we wanted to learn!! We then had some more fish stew and headed for the boat to the next island which was called Korovu! We had to pay a small amount extra here but it was a lot nicer...we were in huge dorms and there was a nice pool and decking area and nice beach!! We spent most of the time here relaxing a chilling out in the pool and on hammocks and in the evening they put on a show with more dancing again and taught us their version of the bula dance...as we had already been taught it we were top of the class!! We played some card games and ended up in the pool playing shark attack till pretty late, was really fun though!!
The next day we headed to our favourite island...manta ray!!! We had to pay a fair bit more for here and all of the rest but it was worth it!! We went kayaking to another beach and snorkelling and played beach volleyball with the locals, the rooms were really nice and the food was INCREDIBLE!! For dinner they gave you a starter and you got to choose both you lunch and dinner out of so many good options!! That night we drank cocktails and played crab racing which was good...although none of our crabs won! Lucys made it to the next round and then fell asleep as the second round started and all of the others started running off!! Near the end of the night spike and I managed to send most of the people to sleep with a singing competition and a beat the intro game!!!
The next day we had packed to leave and decided that we actually loved it soo much there we wanted to stay another night!! So pretty much repeated the day!!
We then headed to Beachcoomber island which was really cool...quite big the dorms had 100 beds in them which was unreal, the bar area was really nice as well! We got there quite late so we showered and got ready for dinner which was a curry buffet, I am not the biggest fan of spicy foods and burnt my mouth but it was good otherwise!! We then had some drinks on the beach and then danced the night away at the bars 'disco!' Which was good!!
The next day we all went and played mini golf which was fun although on the last hole I hit the ball sooo hard I skimmed I guys head and lost the ball entirely!! Not so great! We then spent the day chilling out, the guys went snorkelling and we read and enjoyed the sunshine!! Later that afternoon we got another boat over to bounty island where celebrity love island is filmed! It was a really nice island...but when we got there we were slightly worried as my bag didn't arrive and I had seen them take it off the boat so cut a long story short another girl had taken my bag thinking it was hers not knowing to look for her bag and hers was stuck on the boat!! We had an early night here and just read and relaxed by the pool!!
The next day we had here again we literally did nothing but eat and play in the pool all day which was soo relaxing the pool was literally on the beach and looked out over the sea it was really nice!! And that night was our last night together as a 6 (our little family) so we went and watched the sunset and then had a really nice dinner and drank and played cards in the room! We then headed to the bar and decided to try our first kava which is fijian plant root that you mix with water and drink in a traditional way in a big circle with a chief and there are rules to drinking it...it looked like mud water...and tasted like it too!! It really wasn't very nice but they made us keep drinking it till it was gone! It is supposed to make you relax and tribes present it to each other as a peace offering!! They than sang songs and we sang and it was a really lovely last night together!
The next day was sad as we left and head back to the main island and left the guys...we got a bus from the ferry terminal down to the coral coast which is south of the main land and stayed at a resort called Mango Bay which was really paradisey!!
We stayed here for three nights and just chilled out the whole time! We swam, snorkelled, read, slept and ate...that was it!! It was soo nice after New Zealand being soo hectic to just relax!! Also on the last night I entered a table tennis competition and came 2nd!! It was pretty close though!! We stayed in huts there are had an 8 bedroom to ourselves the whole atmosphere them singing to you through dinner was so nice! We also played a quiz..cheated so badly with the help of mumma and lizzie and still lost!! Shows you cheaters never prosper!!
We them had a driver come and get us on our third day and take us back to mainland...and he was soo nice! He took us to all of these places he didn't have to..a market, temple, villages, resort spa!! Was really nice!! And then on our final night at horizon we were upgraded to the superior deluxe ocean view room as we were charged for 3 nights instead of 1!!! Not such an ocean view room when you look out and see a construction site though...no sea!! So we went back to Smugglers Cove, had dinner and had another bula ceremony and I was elected chief!!! We sang with them and drank kava (which tasted even worse!) And was really chilled!!
The next morning was really sad as we lost Reanne...I am not the best with goodbyes so made it pretty snappy but we lost another part of our alpaca which was horrid :( and then head to the airport off to Brisbane in Australia...
