This day was not pretty. With 5 hours sleep (and probably still drunk), we said goodbye to LA and caught the Amtrak to San Diego. Feeling very sorry for myself I managed to catch snippets of sleep on our three hour ride, but did manage to see some of the amazing scenery flitting past our windows. About an hour into the trip, the Amtrak heads towards the coast, following it all the way to San Diego, meaning you get to see the beautiful beaches of Southern California on your travels. Arriving in calm and clean San Diego was very different to the intense dirtiness of LA. In San Diego we stayed at Dumsday's friend Ibbs' place, which also provided a welcome contrast to our previous accommodation. Set in an immaculate modern apartment block facing Balboa Park, Ibbs and Anna's two bedroom apartment was filled with 8 people (Anna's parents were also visiting) and the most adorable sausage dog called Missy. But at no point did it feel too crowded. True, our suitcases were a trip hazard, but everyone was so nice and inviting that it never felt as though anyone was stepping on another's toes.
When we arrived, Ibbs and Anna were still at work, so after being welcomed by Anna's parents we set off to explore downtown San Diego and do some shopping. San Diego's Westfield Horton Plaza Mall is like an MC Escher painting, with bridges and corridors criss-crossing between towers. Checking out a Sunglass Hut, I was complemented on my fake RayBans by the shop assistant who was amazed at their authenticity, even offering to buy them off me. A few small purchases later we bought some BBQ ingredients (in a over-tired experience of impatience and indecision), we taxied it back to Ibbs and Anna's. Drinking, chatting and playing with Missy was followed by a BBQ in their communal entertainment area and a dip in the spa, before being kicked out after 10pm for more drinks in the apartment, laughing as Missy used our legs as obstacle courses and beds. Yet another night where we didn't go to bed until we were filled with alcohol and way beyond exhausted, sleeping on giant luxurious blow up beds at 2am.
Highlights: Union Station in Los Angeles; seeing Californian beaches; the cleanliness and calmness of San Diego; playing with Missy; chilling in the spa; comfy giant blow up beds
Lowlights: the giant hangover; San Diego's heat; losing patience with each other while shopping due to tiredness
