Happy New Year!
Headed off the next morning down the Midlands Highway towards Hobart. On the way was a small town called Ross. George had read a brochure advertising a bakery in Ross which had the 'Best scallop pies in Tassie,' so we had to stop and have a look.
Ross is a gorgeous town, with one wide expansive road bordered by large leafy trees on either side, creating an elegant and graceful streetscape. The buildings were all old and historic, but refined and stylish both in their architecture and the wares they sold.
The scallop pies were delicious. We had never heard of scallop pies before, but I guess Tassie is famous for its seafood. The strange thing is this town is almost smack bang in the middle of Tassie, about as far away from any coast line as you could get. While we were there I got a text wishing us happy New Year from our friend Ross. When I told him we were in a town called Ross, he got quite excited.
We continued on our way. We had decided not to spend a night in Hobart, but to drive through to Huonville which was about half an hour further south. We would have to come back the next morning to the market, but it was only half an hour.
The Midland Highway between Launceston and Hobart runs down the centre of Tassie and is the straightest, least windy, and least hilly road in Tassie. However when you get to Hobart it is very hilly, with narrow crowded streets. And the road south of Hobart to Huonville is very windy and steep. It was hard work in the van. At least tomorrow we will be returning in the car.
Huonville is very pretty, and the caravan park is set in large open grounds surrounded by hills, with a small stream running through it. We had resident ducks to feed, chickens (fresh eggs available), and an occasional sheep shearing. Lovely spot.
