Cambodia, land of even more rice paddies than Vietnam, of freakishly wet afternoons, of tuk tuks ploughing muddy potholed lanes, of beautiful countryside covered in rainforest, and of beautiful temples, enough to make even a super atheist cynic like Geoff feel a bit spiritual. For a moment. We loved Siem Reap and the temples of Angkor. The people were pretty cool too, even though they scored highly on the hassling factor at all the tourist haunts. That must be forgiven though, as the poverty in this country, still recovering from the effects of the horrendous Pol Pot regime, is widespread and hard to watch - outside the main streets of the tourist town of Siem Reap this is one of the most undeveloped countries either of us have seen. We spent three nights in Siem Reap, doing two full days at the temples. There were many we didn't see, but we adored the highlights of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. Wow, did people love the gods back then. That was some serious building works considering these sandstone structures were built 1000 years ago and are still largely standing, despite little in the way of conservation since. Most be the protection of the gods or something…The photos tell the story. Onjoy.
