well its been an interesting few days to say the least. basically i set off on tuesday morning at 6am, i was very hungover and not in the mood for a long coach journey. we had to go to rainbow beach 2hrs from noosa to get the ferry to fraser island. fraser island is the largest sand island in the world, that basically means there are no roads and the sand is very very soft and a pain to walk in! when we got to fraser we drove along seventy-five mile beach in our 4x4 coach to our accomodation, then we went for a walk in a bit which is like a desert - it was very strange, the sand changes colour when you step in it, the minerals make it go while and black and yellow it was amazing to leave a trail of coloured sand behind you wherever you walked. we then went to lake mckenzie which is the most beautiful place i have ever seen in my life, the photos even do it justice so the second i manage to get them uploaded you will see what i mean, the beach was white and the waters were an amazing colour. wednesday we were up early to do our trek to lake wabby, it was a 1.8km trek, which doesnt sound that far but it was over very steep sand dunes, it was such hard work and you didnt feel like you were making progress as the sand used to slip from under you when you were trying to go uphill. eventually we all made it there, it was ok but not that spectacular, it had cat fish and rainbow fish in it but i still got in for a swim coz it was so hot! the island is not touristly in the least there are no bars or cafes and very few toilet facilities - our first toilet stop was at 10am after lake wabby and the toilets were long drops (basically they have no bowl and the waste decomposes at the bottom, they are horrible) after that we went to the maheno shipwreck, the cathedrals coloured sands and indian head, indian head involved another trek this time over steep rocks with no exact path layed out, it was pretty touch but worth it when i got to the top the views were unbelievable. we stopped for lunch at indian head (a picnic) which is the furthest point north you can go along the fraser island coastline, we were meant to be leaving about 1.15pm before the tide started to come back in and going to eli creek but things never work out as planned! the 4x4 bus decided to break down and it just wouldnt move, our guide tried to radio through for help but when your in the middle of nowhere they dont get a signal. it was quite funny at first until the tide started to come further in, eventually another tour company came and they tried to tow us but all they suceeded in doing was dragging the bus closer to the sea and getting the tyre buried deeper in the sand! eventually it was decided that the people from our bus would get in the other companies bus, leaving behind our guide and the bus. we would be dropped off at the resort where they would try and arrange a way for us to get back to rainbow beach and send help for our guide. i was desperate for the toilet at this point as it was 3pm and i refused to go behind a bush like so many others had done - think how many poisonous animals there are in oz, what could i do to defend myself if i had my pants down?!! so we all got in the other companies bus to set back on 1.5hr journey, it was a race against time coz of the tide when suddenly half an hour in.... you guessed it we broke down! it only had a flat tyre though so it was fixable, we all tried to help and seriously it looked so hard to jack the bus up an soft sand with the sea rippling around your ankles. finally we set off again and to cut an extremely long story short we got back to rainbow beach about 2hrs later than planned, i havent seen any of it yet as i just went straight to bed to recover but i did discopver i have lost a flip-flop. although fraser is beautiful i have never been so stressed, what started as a bit of excitement was a full blown disaster but we got back safe and our original guide didnt drown or get swept away, they made it just in time! im heading to airlie beach tommorow but iv not quite decided on how to get there, as there is no direct route and if i leave at 3.30pm tommorrow i dont arrive until 9.30am saturday, its gonna be a long flipping day! anyway im off to explore rainbow beach. hope everyones ok! love to all!
