Bangkok, Thailand
I flew into Bangkok after a very bumpy and sicky flight. I transited in Singapore where I had missed my connecting flight to Bangkok but had been booked onto another one so all was good. I couldnt wait to just get to the hotel and be able to have a sleep after 15 hours of watching everyone else sleeping on the planes!!
When I got the taxi rank at the airport, tired and ill, I realised that it might be harder than i hoped to get to my hotel. The taxi driver (who moved some vegetables out of his boot to get my bag in) didnt speak a word of English and when I passed him the map he looked like he had never seen such a place! The journey into the city was less than impressive, but I had prepared myself for it being quite an ugly place so I wasnt too dissapointed. After much hand flapping and map spinning, the taxi driver arrived where he thought the hotel was. We drove up a back alley and almost into the Kitchen of a local Thai family, and luckily he had found it so I was safe.
Although in a really run down area with no tourists, the hotel was amazing. The staff really friendly and helpful and I waited there for Susannah to arrive on the midnight plane from China. It had a lovely courtyard with fresh flowers and fish in ponds with fountains falling on them! A world away from the houses next door.
The next day, with Sues safely here, we braved it onto the streets trying to find the Koa San road so we could see if any other tourists were in town. It took us ages to walk anywhere as we got constantly hassled by men trying to take us on city tours, saying we couldnt go to certain places but they would take us elsewhere. It was so annoying! We ended up just going to a few markets and having some drinks as it was so tiring trying to walk anywhere in the heat with the people trying to scam us.
We ended up in a cool bar on Koa San road in the evening and listened to acoustic cover acts whilst drinking local beers, feeling like Bangkok had defeated me but looking forward to the journey ahead.
The next day was so hot we didnt do much until the evening, when we left for the train station in the monsoon rains and got our night sleeper train headed for Chiang Mai.
