Monday 7th Mary we moved onto Rainbow Beach ready for our trip to Frser Island on Tuesday. We arrived at Dingo Backpackers Hostel ready for our meeting at 4.30pm where we were told all about Fraser Island, what to expect and Dingo warning! We were really anxious about meeting our group as we'd heard from so many people we've met about their bad experiences, people not getting on, arguments and basically being put into groups with complete idiots! Anyway, we were so lucky as we had a great group, all got on really well and were a fine example of great team work (pat on the back guys!). Some of us went out to eat that night and all met in the bar before our trip.
We were up v. early to pack the vehicle with our camping gear, food and alcohol of course! We finally got to Fraser Island about midday. We then drove to Eli Creek, the ship wreck and the pinnacles. We then went to set up camp for the night on the beach. Once tents were up, drinks were out and we started to cook our first meal...steak, salad and potato salad. This was probably our only meal without sand in! We then drank lots, played drinking games and were very merry!
We awoke early the next morning. Rocky woke me up at stupid o'clock to see the sunrise, which was worth it but not good with a minging hangover! Some of us feeling very rough we managed so pack up and move onto Lake McKenzie which for me made all the sand eating, digging holes in sand to go to loo and just being thoroughly dirty for two days all worth while! The lake was amazing. Pure white sand, clear water which was as pure as drinking water, not salty at all. We spent time here playing frisby and ball in the lake and some of us slept off our hangovers on the sand. We then made lunch before heading off to Rainbow Gorge which we didnt make it to as sun was starting to set.
We set up camp the second night and had dinner which was chicken stir fry, with lots of sand. Very crunchy! We attempted to play more drinking games but didnt last long due to our lingering hangovers! Mine included..lightweight!
This night two Dingo's walked passed our camp site and they came back during the night sniffing roude our tents for food!
The last day we headed to Lake Wabby before catching the barge back to Rainbow Beach. This was good and involved a bit of a treack over the sand dunes which was fun and knackering! The lake was nice, but Lake McKenzie was the ultimate!
Overall we loved our trip to Fraser. Was an experience, especially when your sat on the beach in the morning hovering over a hole in the sand having a number 2! How lovely! It was so nice to get back to civilisation, have a shower and use a proper toilet. Have learnt toappreciate a proper toilet!
We said goodbye to our group the night we got back which was sad:( We had a wicked time!
