We booked a tour through our hostel that took us around Ha Long Bay on a boat. We spent one night on the boat & one night in a hotel. The limstone peaks were really pretty & we also went to see some caves that were really spectacular. We had the option of doing a trek on Cat Ba Island. It was only for 2 hours & everyone was doing it apart from a couple with a baby so we figured it wouldn't be that hard. We felt like Sam & Frodo! The first part was an almost vertical hill, then it flattened out for a while & I thought it would be like that for the rest of the journey but there were yet more hills & parts where we were literally hanging off rocks with a massive drop to the side of us. We came out alive & uninjured but rather hot & sweaty! We then went back to the boat & sailed around a floating village. The villagers even had dogs living in the middle of the water with them! We had the chance to canoe around the peaks on our own. We weren't very good at steering so we floated over to where some giant birds were circling, they didn't get scared off & we watched them dive down & get fish to eat. We then went onto monkey island. Monkeys were roaming over the beach & our guide had taken crisps to entice them out but the big leader snatched the whole packet off her & scarpered into the trees! Some of them stayed out tho, one big one that liked Charlie quite alot, one smaller one who didn't like Charlie so much & chased him down the beach! And some baby ones. Two of them were playing in the trees & catapulted themselves up into the air off the branches & one other little baby one who was doing rolypolys in the sand & chasing his own tail. We only had half an hour there, we wished we had longer!
