Hey everyone,
Just spent the day travelling around Ayutthaya, the former capital of Thailand, by boat, tuk-tuk and bike. Bike was easily the most hair-raising experience of the day! The place is beautiful and has loads of really cool temples although I feel pretty templed out now! Took some pics which I will try to upload when I get the chance so watch this space.
Before Ayutthaya we spent a few days in Kanchanaburi which is an unbelievably cool place. Apart from having the most delicious curry I have ever tasted we also went rafting down the River Kwai (saw a python!), swam in a waterfall, rode on the death railway and saw the Bridge over the River Kwai. Having been to the Railway museum we were able to better appreciate the history behind the railway and each of the 90,000 + sleepers represent someone who lost their life in the building of it. The last night ended with a visit to a Thai nightclub with a random group of travellers we had picked up on route. It was certainly an experience and the attention I was receiving was not of the sort I wanted!
The first days were spent in Bangkok where acclimitisation was the name of the game. The city is positively alive with tourists and things going on and while it is not my favourite place it is safe and friendly and the temples are very impressive. Oh, and the beer is cheap!
Heading to Sukhothai tomorrow once I have picked up my washing and got what pics I have onto CD. After that it will be up to Chiang Mai for some trekking then we will be leaving the beaten track to venture into Laos, something I am very excited about. If you want to hear how all this goes please stay tuned as updates will appear in the not so distant future.
Hope you are all well and I look forward to hearing what you are all up to via email.
