So it all began very early on the Monday morning. A 5am alarm followed by a quick jump in the shower and a bacon sarney. The general mood was one if excitement despite the early get up. Bags were chucked in the car and off mum wizzed us to the big glass building that is terminal 5. Arriving just after 6.30, we proceeded into the terminal and checked in electronically. We then waited patiently watching many weird and wonderful people walk past untill it hit 7am and we went through to departures. After a swift refreshing coke and a browse of the luxuries and the purchase of the essentials we went through to our gate. Despite a 20 minute delay we were onto our plane and on the very back row. We were welcomed onto the plane by our section's caving crew. Two blokes who can only be described as bent as a butchers hook, an overly sun-kissed woman in her fiftys and a middle aged woman whose arse I am surprised squeezed through the aisle. All harsh but very fair I feel. Needless to say we were ever so slighty dissapointed. The flight was relatively smooth and painless. Quite uninterestingly and ironically out plane meal was a roast despite mum cooking us our 'last roast for months', the night before.
The next thing we knew we landed at JFK airport at just after 12.30pm local time. After what seemed like no less than an eternity we made it through US customs and out into the stifeling 32 degrees New York heat.
We jumped into a taxi and less than 45 minutes later we arrived at our hostel and checked in.
After a quick shower we headed straight back out the door and walked east towards central park, had a brief wonder then headed for the nearest subway, 103rd street, 2 mins from our hostel.
First stop, Time Square. As soon as we pooped our tierd, foreign and disorientated heads out of the subway our faces immediately lit up. Not only because of the excitement ad what we were seeing, but the sheet amount of lights in Time Square. Lights and advertisements everywhere you can see. Simply amazing. We stumbled around a bit and looked in a few shops.
It was not long before we were approached by a rather large, round, bearded young man with a heavy Scottish accent. Needless to say he spotted us Brits from a mike off. After quick pleasantries he told us he was in New York trying to make a name For himself as a comedian in the Big Apple. Speaking in a very quick and deep Glaswegian accent he asked us if we wanted tickets to see him and some other funny looking Americans in their stand up. Seeing that he had made us laugh constantly for the first 2 minutes we met him we gladly agreed to buy his tickets on the condition that he gave us a heads up on a few good places to go for a well deserved beer. He of course agreed, so off we went a few blocks away to a small bar called Rudy's bar. A very lively place with all sorts of people, including mexican staff who never seem to be at the speed of below 20mph. Pitcher of beer was $7 along with as many free hotdogs we wanted. 4 pitchers later and a copious amount of hotdogs later we decided to make tracks back to the hostel as it was 3 in the morning UK time. After a struggle to get ourselves back to the Time Square, 42nd street subway, we finally got back to the hostel our went out like a light. Day one. Boom.
