Ecuador
Quito (2 nights)
Going out on the town and not making it to bed before check out was not the brightest idea, especially since I had to stand for 2 hours on the crowded local bus with all my bags to get to the airport (had to pay for the Coby steak the night before!)then for 2 more hours to queue to check in!
Arrived in Quito very tired and hit the sack! The next morning was a gorgeous day so decided to explore the old town. Was really enjoying myself and was very impressed by the colonial old town, parks and general feel of the place when the inevitable happened. Id heard many stories about how dangerous Quito was so made sure I avoided back alleys and was only carrying 10 dollars etc etc. Turns out the local thiefs dont careif the street is busy. This teenage guy jumped out infront of me wielding a broken bottle and shouting camer camera which I was holding to protect from pickpockets. Luckily my first reaction was to jump back which gave me some space.Probably should have just given it to him butmy automatic reaction was to shout No and retreat! Luckily at this point he looked as scared as I was, thought about it for 30 seconds and then ran off to jump on the back of his mates moped. One of the locals that was watching advised me to stay in the Centre of the town. ( I was literally 4 blocks,3 min walk from the main square!) Walking back it was obvthat there was a massive police presence in the main squares but none even if you only wander slightly.
Who needs to do extreme sports to get the adrenalin flowing? Just come to Quito!! Chilled out in the park on the way back and sampled the local food from the food stalls to allow my heartbeat to get back to normal!lol
ThinkIll be leaving Quito for Banos tomorow!!
