Hi! We left home in cold wet conditions and by day 3 we started warm days but still cool nights, so we didn't start camping until night 5 at Banka Banka station, 100 Kim's north of tenant creek. Having stayed underground at coober pedy with no noise and light and the best sleep yet, we then experienced the noisiest on our first night camping, with live entertainment, cicadas, a generator and road trains all night. It was like caravan Mecca , everyone starts rolling in from 3 pm onwards to get their spot. There was a free range calf wandering amongst the campers, I would have been a bit concerned if I was that calf seeing the size of the campfire!
We went to mataranka springs, an oasis, beautiful palms and trees and ferns, very clear springs and creek flowing to the river. Sounds paradise, but the pools were so crowded and the line up of gophers you wouldn't believe! Dennis said it reminded him of cocoon, the movie. We decided to give it a miss and continue to Katherine where we are staying for two nights. The agile wallabys came out about sundown and fossicked around the campsites. Very warm here and it took a while to get to sleep laid on top of the sheet until early hours this morning when I pulled the top sheet up. Two red-tailed black cockatoos were feeding in the tree above our camper after breakfast, they are huge up close! We went on a boat tour through the Katherine gorge this morning, simply stunning. Spotted a 2 metre freshwater croc in the shallows and a grey, greater billed heron which are rare in this area. Had lunch at the information centre/restaurant very modern and had an enormous deck overlooking the river. One diner had a kookaburra swoop in and steal a chip off his plate, he was so quick the guy wasn't sure what happened or what it was but I had a good view! Another lady had a bird drop not one but two messages on her but thankfully missed her meal!
It's pretty hot today so we are veging out this arvo in the shade with a cold beverage, den got a can of beer in exchange for some laundry detergent, he was pretty happy about that! They have sunset nibbles and drinks around the swimming pool, we might venture over later. Heading for darwin tomorrow to catch up with kathy and mick and hopefully a reunion with Neil.
