Hello all..........
We have again been on the road or the river and got a fair bit of travelling in since last i wrote.
Slipped across the border into Laos a week ago, across the Mekong and ventured onto an unexpected backpacker trail which has continued to here. 2 full days on a river boat brings you to Lua Prabang, a quaint little colonial french town where everything happens very slowly. People walk slowly, eat slowly and play a lot of french bowls.
This is the first lesson in Laos- things happen when they happen. There is no rush....the dordle and the smile go far here and i fancy i will be ok here for many days yet. Bus schedules are fluid and delays are part of the experience.
From Luaprang most back packers new to Laos continue south to Vang Vieng. The drive is stunning. Vang vieng is like a backpacker boom town. It is in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by huge karst mountains yet has all the mod cons. Complete with its own lazy river. Apparently a right of passage in this region, 2 hours in a tractor tyre, doing jumps from great heights all the way. Was skeptical but very funny.
(Helen has now taken over)Hi. So, we travelled down to Vietinane today, and found a guesthouse, rented bikes and made our way in torrential rain to some statue thing. Got dried, dressed, and headed back out. Had my bag swiped and it had all my worldly belongings in it. Passport, camera, i-pod, Wallet, travellers cheques, phone, diary, book, and Gazs black-book. I chased them down the street to no avail (they were on a moped though, so it wasnt fair game). Have just spent nearly an hour on the phone to American Express. Oh my god. I'm f***ing fuming. Hate all the little b******s, hate them all. f***ing f***wits are little idiots. AAARRRGGGHHHH!
Gaz is now on the phone to passport agency. I could take no more. little f***ers. Bye for now! xxxx
Now gary-following day. In hindsight asking hels to finish my blog in her mood may have been a mistake but i think it shows how frustrating her hour was telling her life story to American express.
She was wearing a fetching but distinctive black and white top and the chase which she gave has become a small ledgend. Donning the same gear today, People have been smiling with the head tilt at us and commenting to hels when just sitting in a cafe. Policeman was supposed to be here an hour ago to complete claim form....but it is Laos. And when i tried to call the emergency number last night...it rang out, probaly playing french bowls. Again Laos.
The best part is....Laos doesnt have a British consulate......ha! Bangkok road trip it is.
Hope all well with all.
Love hels and gaz
