Hello from beautiful chaotic Bali
Hope you are all well. We arrived just before midnight on 7th June and awoke to beautiful sunshine and friendly people. We have always wanted to come here and we have not been disappointed.
We are in Sanur, right on the beach, in a typical Balinese hotel. Sanur was a recommendation from our relatives in Adelaide and it is just right. A quieter resort, if you could call any area of Bali quiet! There are not many tourists, but there are lots of happy smiley genuine Balinese people keen to sell us everything and anything. Not many Brits here either, mostly Dutch, Finns and a few Aussies. Feel so sorry for them as the bomb a couple of years ago did so much damage to their tourism, but I can't see why people shouldn't come, you feel so safe here.
This is the holiday part of our trip, where Dee is let loose shopping (Gary is currently in the lead here) and what a lot of shopping you can do. We just need to rent a boat and get it all shipped back. And it is all so incredibly cheap. Fantastic food too, a typical 2 course meal with drinks all night for two is under ten pounds. I would not like to bore you with the price of all the extremely good fakes, like watches and handbags, perfumes etc!
We have also seen the interior of Bali, having hired a driver all day and a car for just 15 pounds. We went to beautiful Ubud in the heart of the countryside and visted the Scared Monkey Forest, such cute monkeys diving in and out of the trees and in and out of the water for bananas. Of course there and temples a plenty, lots of fantastic local craftspeople, carvers and stonemasons and mechanics stripping down motorbikes on the side of the road.
We have also hired a scooter a couple of times, risking life and limb on the roads of Bali, there are just so many cars, bicycles - and scooters - some with 5 people on, we are looking around to see if we can spot 6! Someone passed us the other day with two children on the back and a table on his head. Of course we too are overloaded with bags of Gary's shopping. He has bought several shirts (note Nigel Kelly!) and has his eyes on more. I will be getting my own back....soon....
We are going to Nusa Lembongan tomorrow, a small island off the coast of Sanur where we are staying, mostly so Gary can do some diving and Dee can do some more sunbathing. Hoping we can find a 4 star hotel for about twenty pounds a night. That's if we can make it out of bed by 8.30 - we are on holiday after all......
Today though, we haved hired pushbikes. Gary has the sporty one and Dee has the pink one with the basket on the front, as you will see in the photos soon if we can get them on the site, as usual we are having trouble downloading the photos...
It is expensive and difficult to ring from here Mums and Dads please note we will call as soon as we can.
Anyway, the sunbed, cocktail and pint of Bintang is calling, so we had better go...
Lots of love
Dee and Gary XXXXX
