We've reached Chile. We're Spending 3 days in San Pedro before heading to La Serena. Chile is vastly more expensive than Bolivia and Peru. I understand they have a growing middle class. This access to wealth has been fairly evident. Restaurants are more classy and the service more personal but I miss Peruvian food in particular.
Strangely, a large proportion of our group has fallen ill, not with my cold, but some stomach bug. Everyone is dropping like flies. I'm praying I'm not next. Our bus ride to our next stop is 16 hours long and I want to have my health intact during this trip.
Since arriving here I've visited the "Valley of the Moon" so called because of its likeness to the surface of the moon and the white appearance the soil has due to the high salt content. I've tasted the dirt and I can confirm a salty aftertaste. I've also visited the "Death Valley". Here we watched the sun set over the Atacama Desert and the Andean mountain range in the distance. Beautiful in deed.
Apart from these excursions, plenty of down time on offer which is welcome bearing in mind how hectic this tour has been. Have watched a number of great films while lying in bed, including the acclaimed Stuart Little, a heart warming story of a orphaned mouse adopted by a human family.(Tear jerker alert) I think I'm ready for La Serena now.
