Day 1 - 6.30am on a saturday morning and we were up packing our bags and the boot of our 4x4's ready for the weekend! We were put into a group of 8 including 3 swiss boys and a german boy who were really good fun to be with even though sometimes french music took over! We took the ferry over and drove along the road which in Fraser Island is the beach! It was so hot and we were very relieved when we reached Lake McKenzie to have a refreshing swim. It was a beautiful lake with amazing surroundings and very different to the lakes in New Zealand. On one of the inland tracks on our way to the campsite we stopped to see a couple of Dingos which were roaming around, we had been warned that they are very vicious animals so we were glad to be inside a car. Before arriving at the campsite we stopped off at Euronga to have lunch. After another long drive down the beach we made it to where we would be living for the next 2 nights. Luckily the tents had already been put up for us so we didnt have to fight the battle of trying to put it up! We settled in before typically the boys were hungry again so whilst we queued for half an hour to have a shower amongst spiders they started to make our asian stirfry and rice! Suprisingly they did a good job and it went down very well. After cleaning up we headed out of campsite gates and down to the beach where we looked up and saw a very starry sky, it was amazing and nothing like we've ever seen in England. The sun had tired us out during the day so we went to sleep in the hot tents.
Day 2 - Another early start with scrambled eggs for breakfast and then it was Olive's turn to drive! We went to the Champagne Pools which were amazing, they get there name from the waves coming over the rocks creating bubbles making it look like champagne. On Fraser Island you can't swim in the sea as it is too dangerous so this was our first time being in salt water but without having to worry about sharks and stingrays! After having a swim and sunbathe we drove along the beach to Indian Head where we had an amazing view from the top of the cliff, looking down the beach, below us we spotted a few sharks and stingrays which everyone got excited about. That afternoon we went to Eli Creek which was really cool as once you walked to the top of the stream we jumped in and the current carried us along to the bottom. We caught up with a few people we had met coming up the east coast which was nice. That night it was our turn to cook dinner which was steak, potatoes and salad, it was really yummy. Later on we headed to the beach again and our lead driver bought down the jeep and played music from it. It was a really good evening and when we decided to go back to the campsite we bumped into a dingo walking straight towards us so we panicked and did the complete opposite of what we had been told not to do, and ran away, we were fortunate that it didnt chase us!
Day 3 - Up early yet again and we quickly packed the 4x4 up and drove to Lake Wabby where we walked for 40 minutes in the heat before finally arriving at the sand dunes which led us down to the lake. We went from being able to stand in the water to a 13 metre drop which made us quite nervous as we saw some rather large fish and so we didn't know what would be below us. After having spent some time there we walked back to the cars and drove along the beach for the last time before getting back on the ferry to the mainland.
It was an amazing weekend and one of the highlights of Australia so far!
