Our next 2 stops on the Kiwi tour were Hot Water Beach and Waitomo. On the way to Hot Water, we stopped at Cathedral Cove, where 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian' was filmed and the spectacular beaches there. The whole area of the coast had great beaches carved out of the roack by the sea and the huge waves that were coming in from the Pacific.
After Cathedral Cove we drove to Hot Water Beach where a lava flow underneath the beach created really hot pockets of sand burried down where if you built a small pool the water heated up and you could have your own spa on the beach. This was great until the water got too hot from being constantly heated and it was impossible to stay in without getting burnt.
The next day we headed off for Waitomo, home to famous black water rafting. We did a tour of the underground caves on a rubber ring where we had to be careful where we tread and jump backwards off waterfalls into the darkness. There were also really cool gloworms on the ceiling that looked like stars in the night sky to attract and kill other insects to eat.
We went to Hobbiton the day after, where the Lord of the Rings trilogy and more recently the Hobbit trilogy was filmed. The set was amazing and made with real timber and kept extremely well by gardeners on site. The tour was really interesing and it included a free drink at 'The Green Dragon'. The guide showed us a lot of the filming locations from the films and it surprised me to find out that a lot of the scenes in 'The Shire' were filmed elsewhere in the country.
