Our road trip across the continental USA has ended! Well, nearly. We are currently in Philadelphia for a much deserved 4 day break from 3 weeks on the road, and we have one last destination (NYC!) before the long flight back to the UK ... and real life. I'm glad and sad for it all to end, its a strange combination!
Since leaving New Orleans (good 4th of July fireworks by the way), we made a stop in Memphis to check out the gates of Graceland (too broke to go inside, but it still looked awesome!) and I went on a little tour of Sun Studios, which is where Elvis and Johnny Cash recorded. They have kept everything the same since those days, so it was pretty amazing being in such a legendary place. We then left the land of the delta blues (yes, reference to Marc Cohn there, it had to be done!) and made our way up to the country music capital that is Nashville to check out some local bands ... and we even managed to throw in a spot of line dancing in a saloon-esque bar! It was good fun, we got quite into it (fear not, pictures will be up at one point). I liked this portion of the trip, the cities had a lot of charm and character, and it was great sampling a variety of musical backgrounds - from the jazz streets of New Orleans, to the blues in Memphis and the cowboy tunes in Nashville.
We then made our way through Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland to finally get to Washington DC, which was our last camping stop. Such an impressive city, I really enjoyed it. I spent the day just wandering around, from the Arlington Cemetery with JFK's grave and the tomb of the unknown soldier, to the White House and of course all the (free) museums! So yeah, it was a really good day, topped off with our last dinner as a group at a rather swanky (if slightly over our budget) cajun restaurant. It was a nice way to end the trip! We left everyone this morning/afternoon in Philly as they continued on to New York. We have 4 nights here in this hostel (which is in the middle of a huge park, rather quiet and isolated but its a nice relaxing break from camping!). On wednesday we will be hitting to Greyhound up to the Big Apple, which I am very much looking forward to!
