So we have experienced our first bus breakdown, and I seriously hope there will not be many more of these to come in the next few months!
The bus we took from Luang Prabang back to Vientiane decided to die halfway through the journey, in the middle of the twisty mountain roads, about 2 hours north of Vang Vieng. So we just sat there, for about 2 hours (probably a bit more) in the blistering heat with no food and very little water. It was not fun. We eventually set off again, but the aircon was basically out and we got to Vientiene quite late last night - what was supposed to be a 9 hour bus turned into 12 ½ or so. Lovely!
Luang Prabang was really beautiful though, sort of like Hoi An with the old colonial buildings and lanterns. The night market was particularly tempting - I ended up buying a lot more than I should of. Oops!
We went to the Elephant Village for some elephant riding as well which was quite fun (pictures will be up soon). Unfortunately, the waterfalls were supposedly dry as it is the wrong season for them, so we didn't get to go - although that was bulls*** because some friends told us they went there that afternoon and they were awesome. Oh well, we just chilled, got a pedicure, etc. Really quite and relaxing in Luang Prabang, although we did have to avoid some kids who have started throwing water at people (traditional new year thing here, which is in a few days time… shame we are missing it!)
Today we are in Vientiene - said goodbye to our Laos travelling companion this morning (which was rather sad) so now it's back to the three of us! Don't think we'll be up to much today or tomorrow, this month round trip has been ridiculously amazing, but rather exhausting so I think we'll need a bit of a recovery before Australia. Tomorrow, we are braving public transportation again, this time a bus across the border to Thailand and then a sleeper train to Bangkok. We'll be returning to the familiarity of Khao San Road on Saturday (hopefully the protests and 'emergency state' plastered all over CNN and BBC won't be as bad as they make it seem to be!), then its goodbye Asia and off to Sydney on Sunday :D

Christine Reposez-vous bien en attendant le prochain voyage en bus/train ... moins éprouvant que le précédent ! Et ne croyez pas trop les medias pour l'état d'urgence à Bangkok, ils ont une légère tendance à l'exagération !
Olivier Now you are really travelling around the world: throwing out little vietnamese ladies out of trains; 24 hours bus ride accross Vietnam and Laos with doggy passengers; bus breakdown in the middle of nowhere in Laos; riots and civil unrest in Bangkok.. that's the spirit! Keep up the good job!
